Inscribed by Cocteau: "Mon chere Francis Gerard acceptez de votre vieil ami cet example de reussite je ne parle pas du livre mais de la mort de Guillaume. Jean Cocteau 1923." Guillaume Thomas is the central character in the novel. Francis Gerard pseudonym of Gerard Rosenthal 1903-1950 was a poet and associate of Leon Trotsky.
