Édition originale. Un des 50 premiers exemplaires réimposés sur vergé d’Arches seul grand papier n° 25. Deuxième oeuvre dramatique de Paul Claudel la première à être mise en scène L'Annonce faite à Marie initie en cela son théâtre et figure parmi ses pièces majeures avec Le Soulier de satin. Suivant son idée « qu'en art il n'y a rien de définitif » Claudel remaniait voire réécrivait ses textes. Ainsi de la genèse de cette pièce dont le propos augural fut écrit dix ans plus tôt sous le titre La Jeune Fille Violaine pièce elle-même remaniée en 1899 avant d'être réécrite entre 1910 et 1911 pour donner naissance à L'Annonce. Le 22 décembre 1912 a lieu la première sur la scène du théâtre de l'OEuvre. Claudel prendra une part importante comme metteur en scène aux côtés de Lugné-Poe jusqu'à rédiger un manifeste théâtral. S'il n'y a que trois représentations le public d'initiés qui s'y rendit sut s'en faire l'écho. L'Annonce est un succès alors que le texte a paru quelques mois plus tôt avril 1912 en volume et dans La NRF n° 36 à 40. André Gide incite la jeune maison des Éditons de la NRF à un retirage : « Qu'avons-nous décidé de faire pour les représentations de L'Annonce faite à Marie Rien Il serait tout de même bon qu'on pût trouver le livre à acheter dans les couloirs. Bon et presque indispensable - autant pour Claudel que pour nous. » Passé dans la bibliothèque de Raoul Simonson cet exemplaire a été précieusement établi dans le pur style « janséniste » où le décor n'apparaît qu'une fois le livre ouvert. Les contreplats de maroquin ivoire richement ornés comportent le chiffre « MM » répétés aux quatre angles. Nous pouvons émettre l'hypothèse que cette reliure fut commandée par le bibliophile Marcel de Merre dont le goût pour Claudel était prononcé. Il possédait en outre l'édition illustrée par Maurice Denis de L'Annonce faite à Marie dans une spectaculaire reliure de Paul Bonet. Si notre exemplaire n'est pas passé en vente lors de la dispersion de sa collection Sotheby's 2007 il est cependant acquis que Marcel de Merre fit régulièrement travailler Huser en usant de ce monogramme pour les pièces de grande qualité.
