Wrappers lightly worn with some light shelf-wear to the extremities present. Book is free of ownership marks. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. 'Chine' is Hélène Hoppenot's personal testimony of her trip to China during which she photographed the everyday life and habits of Chinese people in the city and country. Her striking black and white photographs are here reproduced in 80 photogravures and prefaced by a beautiful rumination by the poet and playwright Paul Claudel on the nature of photography along with his impressions of China during his time spent there as a young diplomat. In this ten-page essay Claudel uses a disturbing image of a man on the brink of suicide as a springboard into a discourse on photography's ability to freeze a moment of incalculable depth into a visual sign 'li visible' at which point it becomes like a written text 'le lisible' and open to interpretation.
