192924513New York: Albert & Charles Boni. Very Good. 1929. First American Edition. Hardcover Second Printing. no dust jacket light bumping to bottom corners spine cloth a little sun-browned overall a good solid clean copy; bookplate of longtime MGM writer/producer Carey Wilson on front pastedown. B&W illustrations Originally published in France in 1920 this was the first of Colette's novels to appear in America and it set off something of a vogue for her work which lasted until roughly the mid-1930s. It's the story of a gigolo which playwright-journalist Lewis Galantière called "a brilliant work of character portrayal tragic in its implications but on the surface a comedy in a genre new to us and full of a slightly macabre fascination." The first film version was a French production released in 1950 directed by Pierre Billon; more recently Stephen Frears directed an adaptation in 2009 from a screenplay by Christopher Hampton starring Rupert Friend and Michelle Pfeiffer. The novel has also served as the basis for a couple of TV adaptations and a ballet. . Albert & Charles Boni hardcover books

195216936New York: Random House. Very Good in Very Good dj. c.1952. First Edition. Hardcover. some wear to top and bottom edges of covers otherwise a nice clean copy; jacket has a bit of light soiling tiny stain on rear panel. B&W photographs "The first non-musical hit of the season" reads the first jacket blurb -- so of course when Hollywood got around to it the first thing they thought was "hey this thing could really use some songs!" Not a bad decision though since the resulting film managed to not only get past the censors who were concerned because lovely young Gigi was after all "in training" to be a high-class courtesan but also to take home the "Best Picture" Oscar for 1958. The novel was originally published in 1944 and had been filmed in France in 1948. The Broadway version made a star of Audrey Hepburn who is featured in all three of the photographs in this edition but of course they hadda get a real French girl Leslie Caron for the movie. .
