Illustré de pointes-sèches originales par Grau Sala cet exemplaire de 1952 témoigne de l'intérêt bibliophilique pour les éditions de luxe associant texte et gravure au lendemain de la guerre. L'uvre s'inscrit dans l'uvre romanesque de l'auteur nourri de son expérience autobiographique et de son regard acéré sur les murs de l'époque. "Willy" was the pen name of Colette's first husband Henry Gauthier-Villars an author of whom she said she would never have become a writer but for him. Après des délais largement dépassés et une rédaction maintes fois repoussée - Colette avait eu l'idée de ce roman dès août 1922 - La Seconde paraît avec quelques coupures du 1er janvier au 1er mars 1929 sous forme de feuilleton dans Les Annales la revue que dirige Pierre Brisson. Ce fut « Difficile à écrire » confie-t-elle à Marguerite Moreno :« . J'ai fini. J'y crois à peine. Il n'y a plus que les petits supplices des épreuves et autres malices typographiques. » Le titre provisoire était « Le Double » mais c'est bien sous celui de La Seconde qu'il est publié. Cette histoire d'un triangle amoureux où la jalousie et le mensonge se partagent l'intrigue a été nourrie de souvenirs et d'expériences vécues par l'auteur lui-même : on reconnaît volontiers les bribes de son histoire avec Henry de Jouvenel et l'amitié qui unit dans le roman Fanny et Jane rappelle celle de Colette pour sa rivale Germaine Patat : « la rivalité entre deux femmes amoureuses d'un même homme se transforme en une solidarité complémentaire face à l'incurable désinvolture masculine . Colette a déjà exploité cette situation dans une nouvelle de La Femme cachée ‘Le Portrait' où deux amies finissent par mépriser l'homme qu'elles ont toutes deux aimé » Société des amis de Colette « Présentation de l'oeuvre ». Architecturé composé de telle sorte qu'il se prête bien à l'adaptation théâtrale le roman sera porté à la scène en 1951 par Colette et Léopold Marchand l'auteur dramatique qui avait déjà collaboré à l'adaptation de Chéri en 1921 et de La Vagabonde en 1923. La première aura lieu au théâtre de la Madeleine avec Maria Casarès dans le rôle de Fanny le 15 janvier 1951 dans une mise en scène de Jean Wall. Bel exemplaire à toutes marges.
