Colette."

A fine inscription in this attractive production.

The first edition of L'Entrave appeared in 1913. This edition is elegantly illustrated by André Dignimont 1891–1967 an artist for whom Colette felt both admiration and friendship she called him "Dig". She left a charming evocation of his art:

"When I wish to be alone with you I politely set aside your acrobats your sailors and your cherry-mouthed non-commissioned officers; I beg pardon of your gentle female livestock; I turn the corner of an empty house whose shutter flaps peacefully stained with blood and I find you bending over a floral tailpiece—hearts of Jeannette narcissi and columbines mingled let us not forget the forget-me-not!—which you paint careful moved and dreamy like a maiden of old."

He also illustrated Mitsou La Vagabonde and L'Ingénue libertine.

The illustrations in this volume display the full range of his palette: sensual scenes an opium den urban landscapes as well as rural ones. Colette herself can be recognized in several of them.

The fine inscription in this copy reflects both Colette's wit and the character of "Tonton" evidently a figure deeply attached to freedom.
Mornay
