Ainsi le nom "Tarot de Marseille" est-il plutôt une notion globale désignant la branche la plus importante de l'ensemble de la tradition du tarot que la dénomination d'un jeu particulier. Le jeu de tarot de Marseille réputé comme étant le plus ancien date du milieu du 17ème siècle et remonte aux images peintes à la main du célèbre tarot milanais des Visconti-Sforza du milieu du 15ème siècle. Le Tarot de Marseille comprend 78 cartes. 22 d'entre elles sont les arcanes mystères majeurs. Ces arcanes recèlent toutes les étapes et aspects importants de la vie et concernent aussi bien la situation de l'âme et de l'esprit que les rapports et événements supérieurs de l'existence. Les 56 cartes constituant les arcanes mineurs précisent l'interaction entre le ou la consultante et son environnement.
