Hardcover. some wear to top and bottom edges of covers otherwise a nice clean copy; jacket has a bit of light soiling tiny stain on rear panel. B&W photographs "The first non-musical hit of the season" reads the first jacket blurb -- so of course when Hollywood got around to it the first thing they thought was "hey this thing could really use some songs!" Not a bad decision though since the resulting film managed to not only get past the censors who were concerned because lovely young Gigi was after all "in training" to be a high-class courtesan but also to take home the "Best Picture" Oscar for 1958. The novel was originally published in 1944 and had been filmed in France in 1948. The Broadway version made a star of Audrey Hepburn who is featured in all three of the photographs in this edition but of course they hadda get a real French girl Leslie Caron for the movie. . While we could not verify that working title Rossellini and co-screenwriter Vitaliano Brancati had drawn on a script by Antonio Pietrangeli entitled "New Vine" for "Journey to Italy" and was likely an error by the news agency.<br/><br/>Loosely based on the 1934 novel "Duo" by Colette. <br/><br/>An English couple Alex George Sanders and Katherine Joyce Bergman eight years married travel to Italy to sell a villa inherited from Alex's uncle. Along the drive and during their stay at the villa they come to the realization they really don't know one another and have little desire to spend time together.<br/><br/>Set in and shot on location in Naples and Rome Italy. <br/><br/>7 x 9 inches. Written in diary form and published between 1900 and 1904 the Claudine series describes the growth to maturity of a young girl Claudine now thought to be largely autobiographical.
