188128016777Boston: A.P. Ordway & Co 1881. Very good to fine; toned some light wear to wrappers. Published in 1881 this booklet offers its reader detailed descriptions of different diseases while also advertising Kaufmann's Sulphur Bitters a "family" patent medicine that claims to treat and cure everything from headaches and rheumatism to kidney disease and Malaria.

The booklet begins with a short biography of Kaufmann and his advice on caring for the sick vaccination "Always be sure that the vaccine is obtained from the cow" p. 4 and diet; following these are over fifty pages of advice for specific diseases. For each Kaufmann discusses the cause symptoms and treatment or cure where applicable. Examples include scabies flatulence bad breath pimples measles diabetes and syphilis. There is also a lengthy section titled "Dr. Kaufmann's Half-Hour Talk with Females" pp. 8-11 which discusses women's health and how his Bitters can cure everything from painful menstruation to amenorrhea; he also asserts later in the booklet that it is "perfectly safe" to take his medicine during pregnancy p. 13. Mental health is discussed under the headings "The Blues" p. 35 and "Hysteria" p. 56; unsurprisingly he attributes hysteria to "menstrual irregularities" which again can be cured with his Sulphuric Bitters.

Stapled in original printed wrappers 8" by 5" pp. 72 with 3 colored plates and several smaller in-text illustrations. First printing of this landmark paper in particle physics in which Kaufmann found that the cathode are negatively charged particles that certain properties of the cathode rays are independent of the nature of the gas that they traverse and determining the ratio e/m. charge/mass "To define the 'birth of an era' is perhaps best left for parlor games. Let me write of the BIRTH OF PARTICLE PHYSICS nevertheless define it to take place in April 1897 and appoint Kaufmann and Thomson as keepers of the gate. Their respective experimental arrangements.are of comparable quality their experimental results equally good."Pais Inward Bound p. 84. "In 1897 three physicists Weichert Kaufmann and Thomson in independent experiments found that cathode rays are indeed negatively charged particles having the peculiar property that the ratio of the mass and the charge of these particles is in the order of 1000 times smaller than for the lightest ion the ion of the hydrogen. The term 'electron' which had previously been used to denote the 'elementary charge' was soon adopted as the name of the new particle. The electron was the first of the later so-called 'elementary particles' to be discovered." Siegmund Brandt The Harvest of a Century" No. 4 p.16 ff. Walter Kaufmann 1871-1947 physicist is best known for the first experimental proof of the velocity dependence of mass which was an important contribution to the development of modern physics including special relativity. unknown

First Edition of the first study of the cartilage changes in achondroplasia with 6 partly coloured plates after drawings of the author. Eduard Kaufmann 1860-1831 was on staff at the Pathologischen Institut when he "specified that the deformity occurred as a result of a disturbance in the growth raste of skeletal cartilage. Because of this interpretation he renamed it chondrodystrophia. This name has been more acceptable than the older term achondroplasia since it better describes the lesion as a disturbance in the growth of cartilage rather than an absence of it".
