"Surgical Removal of Meningiomas : Laurence Heister ushered in the era of surgical treatment of meningiomas with an operation in 1743 in Helmstad Germany. Heister operated on a 34-year-old Prussian soldier who presented with a fungating cranial lesion. Heister applied a caustic of lime; the patient died of postoperative infection. At the autopsy performed by Crellius the tumor was designated "de tumore capitis fungoso." The case was first reported later that year by Kaufman." Joung H. Lee Ed.: Meningiomas. Diagnosis Treatment and Outcome 2009 p.6 "The earliest clinical and gross anatomic description of a meningioma accepted by Cushing and Eisenhardt in their monograph was reported in 1743 by Kaufman. This was the case of a 34 year old Prussian soldier who had " distinguished himself equally well in the wars of Mars and of Venus." A firm slowly growing tumor appeared at the top of his skull. Aus der Sammlung Brunner Luzern.Der Luzerner Kunstmaler Josef Clemens Kaufmann 1867-1926 zeigte schon im frühen Alter von vier Jahren Freude am künstlerischen Zeichnen und begann sich mit der Militärmalerei auseinander zu setzen. Anfang der 80er Jahre wurde er von den Künstler Barthélemy Menn und Hugues Bovy an der Hochschule der Schönen Künste in Genf unterrichtet. Nach seinem Studium reiste er mit 20 Jahren nach Paris und arbeitete dort im Atelier von Luc-Olivier Merson und Benjamin Constant. Er unternahm Studienreisen nach Berlin München Wien und in italienische Städte. Viel später reiste J. C. Kaufmann in die USA 1919-20. Im Jahr 1889 war er in Luzern wohnhaft. 1916 zog er nach Zürich um. Der Künstler gründete die Luzerner Weihnachtsausstellungen und 1906 die Schweizerische freie Künstlervereinigung Secession in welcher er anfänglich in der Eidg. Kunstkommission mitwirkte und zehn Jahre später zum Präsidenten der Vereinigung ernannt wurde. First edition thus of this exceedingly scarce original salesman sample photo catalogue for the short-lived truck manufacturer. Founded originally in 1862 by Stewart Sr. who opened the business originally in Covington KY the company quickly grew and eventually divided into three separate corporations by 1902. The Stewart company cornered the market on cemetery fencing across America manufactured the heavy duty trucks used by the US Army during World War I and installed iron works and benches in New York City’s Central Park the light fixtures in Congress fencing and gates at the Panama Canal the jail cells at Alcatraz Sing-Sing and Leavenworth. These sales photographs illustrate many of the companies purchasing heavy trucks from the US Motor Truck Co. division following World War I. Depicted here are flatbed trucks for The Diem & Wing Paper Co. in Cincinnati OH; Julius J. Bantlin Co. Wholesale Automotive Equipment and Saddlery; panel trucks for Baking companies w/ delivery doors built into the sides; a freezer or ice truck for the Niser Ice Cream Co. featuring curved cab similar to trolleys and other rail cars; or a dump truck for T.W. Spinks Co. featuring a Lehigh lift bed. The Stewart Iron Works truck division would continue until 1928 and also was a key truck supplier for Dow Drug Stores the Cincinnati Enquirer Cincinnati Post Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. and many others. Kaufmann & Fabry was an active commercial photographic firm specializing in architectural photography in Chicago from before 1910 and are still an active company. Founders were Charles D. Kaufmann b. 1888 an Austrian-American and Herman Fabry 1879-1955 German-American who are perhaps best remembered as the official photographers of the 1933 Century of Progress World’s Fair and were awarded not only the rights for publishing and distributing photographs and photos in publications but also operated a camera shop and film processing lab on the Exhibition grounds through 1933 and 1934. No copies of similar photographic catalogues could be located in institutional holdings or Worldcat and in fact almost no contemporary sales literature of the short-lived United States Motor Truck Co. division appears to have survived. 'This three-volume encyclopedia provides a wealth of primary source material on the American theater sic organ an instrument designed for the movie theaters of the silent film era that has now all but disappeared from American pop culture. The first two volumes contain articles about organ manufacturing companies. The third volume is devoted to "the mighty Wurlitzer". Each entry is documented with primary source material such as photos company records stop lists advertisements drawings and interviews and correspondence with organ makers. In addition Junchen has provided an opus list detailing the histories of all of the organs built by each company. These materials will prove indispensable to anyone researching popular music in the silent-film era' Trove presumably quoting the publisher. <p>The first two volumes are by David Junchen 1946 - 30 January 1992. The third volume by Preston Kaufmann is the first of a proposed five-volume series chronicling 'the rise and fall of the Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ plus the company and people behind the product'. Loosely inserted is the four-page prospectus for that set and a circular letter dated 15 December 1995 from the author apologising for the delay in publication of this volume and outlining some of the problems encountered since he 'fell heir to the "Encyclopedia" project four years ago'. Reading between the lines we thought we could discern why no further volumes have been produced. Large 4to approx. 225 leaves red calf-backed cloth-covered boards; an onion skin holograph letter-book of retained correspondence; some bleed through and browning perhaps a dozen or so letters faint to the point of being unreadable but most are legible. Levi Kauffman whose great grandparents came from Germany in 1717 was born in 1833 in Lancaster County Pennsylvania of Christian and Anna Erb Kauffman members of the Reformed Mennonite Church. Levi Kauffman moved to Mechanicsburg in 1854 and set up a hardware and dry goods store. Between 1859-62 he was a cashier in the Merkel and Mumma Bank which became the First National Bank of Mechanicsburg. Later Kauffman was a Collector of Revenue and cashier at the 2nd National Bank 1864-69. In this capacity his correspondents were various officials in regards to the collection of tax revenues for it appears mainly liquor and cigars. Most of the correspondents are Pennsylvanian: from Carlisle York Newport Mechanicsburg Philadelphia New Bloomfield Shippensburg Harrisburg but also Chicago New York and Washington D.C. A letter to Hon. Hugh McCulloch of the US Treasury deals with a recommendation for the Inspector of Spirits. A letter on June 8 to George Schneider Collector in Chicago deals with a seized shipment of cigars but "the cigars had been shipped long before regulations in circular 40 had been promulgated." Kauffman says Mr. Miller who was selling the cigars was "a poor man but of good character" and his shipment should be released to him without penalty. In July Kauffman writes to Hon. E. A. Rollins the Commissioner of Internal Revenue in an unsuccessful attempt to retire and get a soldier appointed as his successor. There are also a few letters relative to church business such as one addressed to Brother A. Hosletter of Shippensburg and some with political content such as a letter to the Governor of Pennsylvania J. W. Geary concerning an appointment for the Supt. of State Printing. There are two or three other letters written to Geary. Another letter with political content is to Hon. John W. Forney who at the time was Secretary of the Senate in Washington DC concerning appointments made by Gov. Geary. In another letter to Forney Kaufmann writes: "It is very seldom that I taste wine or any liquor but I have some of this "California" in my hand and believing it better than most foreign wines I thought I would send you some. Then too it is American which makes it better." There are also a few personal letters addressed to his brother C. Christian S. Kauffman in Columbia concerning money borrowed.
