Collection of twelve pieces full description below pertaining to the Fortieth Anniversary celebration at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement in Pittsburgh all belonging to Hazel Peck Speer a member of the music faculty. Founded in 1895 by the Council of Jewish Women the Settlement provided aid and social services for the surrounding community especially poor immigrant neighborhoods to which the Settlement offered housing health services child services bathing facilities nursing facilities and libraries. The present collection includes the following pieces:. 1. Nine of 15 promotional picture postcards postally unused featuring various Settlement facilities including the swimming pool the gym the children's theater the auditorium the nearby synagogue and the baby clinic. All 14x8.5cm.; all but one from etchings by the artist Samuel Filner. Minor dustiness else all Near Fine.<br /> <br /> 2. "The Irene Kaufmann Settlement.Fortieth Anniversary Exercises and Reception." Bifolium 21.25cm. Faint vertical crease else Very Good and sound. The event including several addresses and a string quartet as well as the performance of two musical pieces by Hazel Peck Speer. <br /> <br /> 3. Original photograph 22.5x18cm. of Speer at the Reception with manuscript snipe at bottom edge and verso. Two copies present.<br /> <br /> 4. Original photograph 20.5x25.5cm. of the Irene Kaufmann Settlement Staff taken the evening of the Reception. Hazel Peck Speer is fifth from the left in the front row. Typescript note signed in manuscript on verso: "To Hazel P. Speer: In the year to come may this photograph recall happy days at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement. Fortieth Anniversary January 17 1935. Sincerely yours Sydney A. Teller." Teller was director of the Settlement at the time of the Anniversary Reception. unknown
