182628188Boston: various imprints but mostly published by the Society 1826-1941 1826. Some wear and chipping to the broadsides; overall in very good condition. 12 items several of which once belonged to the Society viz: Jefferson's Clark's "Address Delivered at the Anniversary Celebration of the Franklin Typographical Society January 17th 1826;" "The Proceedings at the Printers' Festival Held by the Franklin Typographical Society January 15 1848;" a small scrapbook of 30 leaves with newspaper clippings and manuscript annotations chronicling the activities of the Society; menus and proceedings from their annual dinners honoring Benjamin Franklin etc. A detailed description is available. An interesting small archive of material that chronicles the life of a benevolent society devoted to printers in and around Boston. The Franklin Typographical Society was active from its founding in 1824 well into the 20th century. Isaiah Thomas was an honorary member. In 1899 its membership numbered 500 but by the second decade of the 20th century it was in gradual decline which parallels the decline of the printing trades in general.

Boston: various imprints but mostly published by the Society, 1826-1941 unknown books

89756WOODBLOCK PRINTING A COLLECTION OF OFUDA CHARMS IN THREE ALBUMS. Slightly over 1200 ofuda ranging in size from that of a grain of rice there are 97 of these up to 21.5 x 31 cm. However the majority are approximately 15 x 5.5. cm or thereabouts with most having similar vertical proportions. All but three are laid down in the three albums. Two of the albums are matching double-sided accordion-fold albums with brown paper boards 23 x 16 cm each with a calligraphed title slip. 116 and 118 pages respectively including pastedowns. One of them opens with a large sheet of text 31.5 x 18 cm laid down. These albums are made from printed books that have been repurposed: the printed texts two long sheets each printed on one side only and bound parallel to each other back-to-back between the boards were detached and flipped over leaving the blank side of each exposed and then reattached to the boards. There is some ghosting of the printed text in areas that are not covered by ofuda and a few blank pages. The third album 100 pp. including pastedowns has worn cloth-covered boards 27 x 20.5 cm and an abraded title slip. It opens with two manuscript pages and there are a couple of notes within the album. Otherwise it is full of charms pasted down on every page. The album pages are foxed but not the charms. For further interesting information on ofuda charms and other popular printed genre I recommend Rebecca Salter's excellent book: https://www./Japanese-Popular-Prints-Votive-Playin g/dp/0824830830 A wonderful older collection of an ephermeral genre which is by no means easy to find either in collection or singly. unknown books

Gabby has from early in her career gone beyond her roots in design binding creating the text art and printing for several books now. Just as her design bindings push limits and explore possibilities so does her art and print work. It is a remarkable evolution.
"Ralph Emerson wrote this poem "Blight" in July of 1843. He spoke out on climate change and the ways we could shift course by not blindly following others. In describing his travels to Europe while writing on life and nature Emerson said "same faces under new caps and jackets another turn of the old kaleidoscope."
I took some liberties with Emerson's poem surrounding his words with photographs captured at Owen Beach in Washington state on a rainy winter day in 2019. This public beach in the middle of an urban old-growth forest will close for a year beginning in fall of 2020 to mitigate the effects of climate change and rising sea levels. Emerson's words of anger and disappointment at environmental destruction only resonate more with our current climate of melting glaciers and raging fires. As we continue to twist the kaleidoscope I remain optimistic we will find a way to rearrange these fragments and improve the view for future generations." artist statement hardcover books

Leipzig: "Gedrukt bey Wilhelm Gottlob Sommer" 1793. She was a member of the family which owned the famous Schloss Rochsburg situated above the village. It is remarkable that this small village was able to plan and have printed this quite luxurious and attractive work. The front paste-down has a mounted piece of paper with the contemporary inscription "Dies Buch gehört Sophie Wilhelmine Gräfin von Schönburg Rochsburg gebohrne Prinzess von Carolath Schönaich Rochsburg den 5 September 1793." Portfolio 37 x 27 cm printed paper label on the upper cover. 20 examples of printed and manuscript leaves 18 single and two double leaves from the 14th to the 19th centuries each with a small printed label identifying the leaf neatly affixed to the lower margin or verso. The earliest is a leaf from a 14th century Arabic manuscript on vellum; the most recent is a leaf from a manuscript of the Saddharma Pundarika Sutra in Chinese copied by a Japanese priest in 1834. Other examples include a leaf from a Japanese manuscript on secret Buddhist rites written in Chinese by a priest at Kya-san and dated 1571; a leaf from a Persian manuscript containing the Poems of Nidhami dated 992 of the Muhammadan era - or about 1584; a leaf from a Persian manuscript Miraj Nama describing Muhammad's ascent to heaven dated H. 1046 or 1636 A.D.; a leaf from Indian religious manuscript containing extracts from the Puranas in Sanskrit 18th century; a double leaf in Chinese characters printed in Korea probably 18th century which contains Buddhist scriptures as interpreted by the Syen sect; and a printed leaf from a Chinese medical work of the 17th century. A complete list of the leaves is available. Orientalia Incorporated was a bookseller and publisher in New York that specialized in all things Asian during the first half of the 20th century. Among other notables they published the works of Yone Noguchi. The individual leaves were originally stored in 18 paper glassine envelopes; due to the browning of the envelopes the leaves have been removed and placed in mylar sleeves.

New York: Orientalia, Incorporated, [1924] hardcover books

As late as 1771 Baldwin was advertising copies in sheets in the BIRMINGHAM GAZETTE priced at 3 guineas.
