89756WOODBLOCK PRINTING A COLLECTION OF OFUDA CHARMS IN THREE ALBUMS. Slightly over 1200 ofuda ranging in size from that of a grain of rice there are 97 of these up to 21.5 x 31 cm. However the majority are approximately 15 x 5.5. cm or thereabouts with most having similar vertical proportions. All but three are laid down in the three albums. Two of the albums are matching double-sided accordion-fold albums with brown paper boards 23 x 16 cm each with a calligraphed title slip. 116 and 118 pages respectively including pastedowns. One of them opens with a large sheet of text 31.5 x 18 cm laid down. These albums are made from printed books that have been repurposed: the printed texts two long sheets each printed on one side only and bound parallel to each other back-to-back between the boards were detached and flipped over leaving the blank side of each exposed and then reattached to the boards. There is some ghosting of the printed text in areas that are not covered by ofuda and a few blank pages. The third album 100 pp. including pastedowns has worn cloth-covered boards 27 x 20.5 cm and an abraded title slip. It opens with two manuscript pages and there are a couple of notes within the album. Otherwise it is full of charms pasted down on every page. The album pages are foxed but not the charms. 22194New York. Very good. 138 black and white photographs. 64 are approx. 8'' by 10'' or 7'' by 9'' the remainder of the collection in assorted smaller sizes. Many photos curled a few creased and a very few with small tears to edges. Majority very good or better. Approximately a third of the photos have a typed descriptive label attached to the back; others have notes in pen or pencil identifying the subjects. Of the remainder many have a photographer's stamp on the back but are otherwise unlabelled. <br/><br/>Photographs of student printers and instructors nearly all from the New York School of Printing most dated from the mid-1950s through the late 1960s. Many photographs have a detailed description attached e.g. "NYSP students in basement with shipping crates" with one accompanied by a press release from the Printing Education Week Committee. Several images of work in progress have an attached technical description on the reverse explaining the process shown in the photo: e.g. "Registering and Assembling Negatives and Transparencies" "Checking Negative Register" "Burning an Offset Plate" "Preparing 'flats' for contact to blueprint prior to plating" "Hand Composition" "Color Mixing" "Journeymen Instruction in Teletypesetter Operation at the School for Printers Apprentices of The New York School of Printing." Other photos show exhibits from a Printing Education week; high school and college lectures on printing; bookbinding and letterpress classes; exterior shots of the former NYSP building on 49th St. from 1956; design process and scale models for the new NYSP building opened in 1960 and multiple shots of its construction process; and industry booths at a printing trade show or exhibition. Identified subjects include journeymen primters and instructors; representatives of the New York Printing Pressmen's Union #51; and many others identified by name only. One series of 1961 photos showing a tour of a printing workshop bears the stamp "Official Photograph Board of Education - City of New York." Another small set shows a "Printing in Japan" exhibit with several smaller snapshots labeled "Jap Interview" sic. Most photographs are dated between 1951 and 1968 with the largest concentrations in 1956 and '60-61. Photographs lacking a date or description appear to date from the same era with a few exceptions: one photo dated 1943 two 8'' by 10'' enlargements dated 1926 and one 4'' by 5'' photo dated 1933 labelled "Industrial High School / Class in Appreciation of Printing - Studying Foreign Types." unknown books

An extraordinarily beautiful sales catalogue organized around vivid colors as the title suggests. Folio 33 by 25 cm. xxx 30 2 pp. plus wraps. The colors are "Bird of Paradise" "Midnight Blue" "Angel Fish" "Morpho Menelans" emerald curite "Forest Green" "Th Grand Canyon" "Rose Coral" "Italian Waters" "Orchid" "Autumn" and the cars are all Cadillacs. All the cars have in fact two colors both of which are suggested by the color designation and each color and car receives a luxuriant two-page spread with three color illustrations: one for the inspiration for the particular color one of the car interior and one for the outer body. Accompanying the illustrations are fluid intoxicating descriptions that conjure up the imagery the sensate experience the fantasy with only passing mentions of some of the design specifics. The cars include Cabriolets a Roadster a Phaeton Imperials a Brougham a Town Sedan and a Convertible Coupe. One can see designs that both reach back to the fine coaches of a quickly receding era and the more comfortable sleeker cars to come. The brochure was released in conjunction with a road show showcase of the vehicles staged at fine hotels in New York Chicago Los Angeles and San Francisco the Commodore the Drake the Biltmore and the Palace respectively. Wear to the edges of the dust jacket the decorative paper covering the bound card-stock wrap0 with a few scratch lines on front soiling on rear and a few minor closed tears along edges. A hole to the white front fold-in of this jacket. Hunt 1888-1974 followed by four individual issues that provide information on the activities of the local branches of the Society lists of officers and members and advertisements for regional companies in the printing and allied trades. The Los Angeles issue contains remarks by A. B. Bruce McAllister often referred to as "Los Angeles' first fine printer" with his partner Harold Young and the San Francisco issue contains interesting biographic remarks about John Henry Nash and Ed and Robert Grabhorn that I have not seen in any other sources. The piece about the Grabhorns by Carroll T. Harris note the Grabhorn's desire to print a "masterpiece" 4 years before their 1930s Leaves of Grass. Leipzig: "Gedrukt bey Wilhelm Gottlob Sommer" 1793. Apparently unique this poem pays homage to the duchess Sophie Wilhelmine von Schönaich-Carolath 1764-95 for her visit to the small village of Rochsburg in Saxony. She was a member of the family which owned the famous Schloss Rochsburg situated above the village. It is remarkable that this small village was able to plan and have printed this quite luxurious and attractive work. The front paste-down has a mounted piece of paper with the contemporary inscription "Dies Buch gehört Sophie Wilhelmine Gräfin von Schönburg Rochsburg gebohrne Prinzess von Carolath Schönaich Rochsburg den 5 September 1793."
