1955170470New York: Universal Attractions 1955. Vintage promotional photograph of Charlie Fuqua's Ink Spots commonly billed as "The Ink Spots" or "The Original Ink Spots" circa 1953-1955. SIGNED by all four band members with an additional inscription by Fuqua: "Best Wishes / To Bob and Kay / It sure was great working with you / The Ink Spots." The members at this juncture of the band's history were Fuqua Harold Jackson Essex Scott and Jimmy Holmes.

The Ink Spots were formed by Fuqua and Jerry Daniels in the early 1930s in Indianapolis. In 1952 Fuqua left the band and formed his own group also called the Ink Spots. A legal battle ensued since Fuqua co-owned the name with singer Bill Kenny who had joined the original band in 1936. Eventually a court ruled that Fuqua's new group would be named "Charlie Fuqua's New Ink Spots" while Kenny's group would retain the original title. As the photograph on offer shows Fuqua defied the order instead calling his group "The Ink Spots" or "The Original Ink Spots."

In the 1950s the name fell into widespread use across the US with some variations "The Fabulous Ink Spots" "The Amazing Ink Spots" etc. Some of these groups contained original members but most held no actual ties to the original group. In 1967 a federal judge ruled that the name had become public domain and was free for anyone to use.

8 x 10 inches. Good or better moderately toned with a clip at the top left corner see image. Universal Attractions unknown

Upper and lower edges lightly insect damaged insect damage in three small places within the album itself not affecting the paintings title label a little nibbled but nevertheless a very pleasing album blue cloth case somewhat worn and faded with toggles. 24.5 x 18cm. The ten paintings in this album depict a variety of subjects. They are the works of a skillful group of likely amateur ink painters organised by Seika Sanshō 栖霞山樵 and also include his own works. The ink paintings in this album are:

1 Landscape by Koshū 菰舟; 2 Orchid by Kikusui 菊水; 3 Landscape by Seika Sanshō; 4 Peaches by Koshū; 5 Landscape by Kikusui 菊水; 6 Crabs by Koken 菰軒; 7 Landscape by Rokumei 鹿鳴; 8 Narcissus by Seika Sanshō; 9 Landscape by Rokumei; 10 Otafuku Homely Woman Mask by Seika Sanshō.

A double page explanation in calligraphy by Seika Sanshō dated 1930 tells us that this album contains works produced at the second Seika-kai gathering by Seika's group and that he requested Yamada Kokō 山田古香 to contribute the title calligraphy. Kokō's calligraphy "Sei yō shu 静有趣” means "Tranquillity has elegance". Yamada Kokō 1852-1935 orginally from Sanuki Province present Kagawa Prefecture was a professional calligrapher based in Kyoto. . hardcover
1965136674N.p.: N.p. 1965. Three vintage promotional photographs of the African American harmony quartet The Ink Spots.

A look at a musical group that was not only internationally famous in its time but greatly influenced multiple musical genres. The first sepia photograph dates to circa late 1930s during the group's first decade a promotional shot of the group singing for National Broadcasting Company NBC radio.

The second photo a master print for a flyer advertises the group circa 1952 when they recorded two LPs for Verve at the Mapes Casino in Reno Nevada.

The third photo circa 1960s advertises the group in one its many final incarnations in which only founding member Bernie Mackey was still in the group.

The Ink Spots formed in the early 1930s in Indianapolis. The group not only incorporated four-part harmony but each played an instrument cello-as-bass tenor guitar guitar and ukelele incorporating the vocals and instrumentation into a seamless whole.

The band's sound was a major influence on doo-wop rhythm and blues and rock music. The core group remained essentially intact during their most popular decades 1930s and early 1940s but due to the war in 1942 and the death of a founding member in 1944 various "sanctioned" substitutions for members of the group began to take place and the identity of the group dispersed into public domain.

The Ink Spots were awarded a plaque from the Negro Actors Guild for their efforts in breaking down racial prejudice. The original group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

All photographs 8 x 10 inches. Very Good to Near Fine. N.p. unknown
