This edition features accompanying words by Rebecca West and the Surrealist writer and poet Michel Leiris.In September 1954 TÃ©riade published a double issue of Verve dedicated to Picasso and illustrating one hundred and eighty drawings by the master the present work included which were drawn in Vallauris that winter between 28 November 1953 and 3 February 1954. The rich publication reproduced each work in the exact size and chronological order of the original drawings so as to preserve the integrity of the suite. TÃ©riade remarked that this collection of drawings was Picasso's "finest boldest and most poignantly human of all he has produced in the course of his long and brilliant career" E. TÃ©riade ed. op. cit. n.p.At the time Picasso began this series in November 1953 FranÃ§oise Gilot had just deserted him taking their two children with her and leaving him alone as an abandoned man. Deeply hurt he shut himself away in his vacant villa in Vallauris and frantically produced the 180 drawings which represent â€œ. the diary not verbal but visual of a detestable â€˜season in hellâ€™ a crisis in his personal life which led him to question everything.â€ ibid.These works address the central theme of the painter and his model of a man and a woman of the subject and the object handled in a style which is burlesque comic grotesque even caricatured. Some ironically incorporate subjects linked to the world of the circus the monkey the acrobat the clown.The year of this publication 1954 marked the death of Picasso's artistic rival but great friend Henri Matisse and his passing considerably affected Picasso who in some way relied on their competition as a catalyst. With this new absence of living rivalry Picasso was inspired to interact with the artists of the past more than ever continuously holding conversation with historical masters through his own new bold interpretations. La couverture a été réalisée d'après une maquette en gouache découpée, intitulée "Symphonie Chromatique" que Matisse termine en août 1939, à la veille de la déclaration de guerre. Sur fond noir, l'ensemble est orné du titre en jaune et de 12 feuilles avec un léger gaufrage. Cette composition réunit vingt-six coloris différents dans les bleu, vert, violet, jaune, rose, marron, carmin, orange". - Tirage par Mourlot Frères. - Édité par Tériade en 1940. On a black background, the whole is adorned with the title in yellow and 12 sheets with a slight embossing. This composition brings together twenty-six different colors in blue, green, purple, yellow, pink, brown, carmine, orange". - Printed by Mourlot Frères. - Published by Tériade in 1940. A double-page lithograph after Pierre Bonnard in the book (printed by Mourlot)... Numerous black and color reproductions (paintings, photographs, etc.).
