001592Mainz: Gutenberg Johannes and Fust Johann Single leaf from the Gutenberg Bible the first substantial book printed with moveable type in Europe "justifiably treated as Europe's 'editio princeps'" White 'Editio Princeps' page 45 c.1455 approximately 285mm x 390mm in size. Lightly browned and lightly foxed central horizontal fold minor loss to top corner a couple of pin holes remnants of guard to one side but generally fairly clean. Forty-two lines in double column with Lombardic initials in red and blue and title letters NU and MERI alternating in red and blue. Latin text in Gothic script this leaf is from 'Numbers' partial 8:13 to partial 10:23 The purification dedication and setting apart of the Levites; Passover; the Lord instructing Moses to make two silver trumpets; Moses and Aaron set out the tribes of Israel on their journey; the Israelites follow the Cloud of the Lord; and the Ark of the Covenant is carried. Preserved in a vellum folder inside a leather drop back box with onlays. With the 1921 essay by A. Edward Newton about the Gutenberg bible though this is now loose leaves with the margins heavily cropped also contained in a vellum folder. We are unable to state for certain that this leaf is one of the so-called 'Noble Fragments' which were the leaves from the incomplete Gutenberg broken by the bookseller Gabriel Wells and sold off with in a portfolio by Stikeman with the essay by Newton but this seems the most likely provenance with this example also sharing the "neatly executed alternating red and blue lombard headlines" White 'Editio Princeps' page 135. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 12.5" by 8.5". None. A very scarce privately produced facsimile of the General Theological Seminary's own copy of the Gutenberg Bible produced by the Seminary themselves. A two volume very scarce facsimile of The General Theological Seminary of New York's own copy of the Gutenberg Bible. It appears that the Seminary produced this monochrome facsimile with no intention of wider distribution. The Seminary's Gutenberg Bible was sold in 1978 for $2.2 million to the Württembergische Landesbibliothek in Stuttgart Germany.Present here is a two volume facsimile of the Seminary's copy of the Bible the earliest major book printed in Europe using mass-produced metal movable type. It marked the start of the Gutenberg Revolution and the age of printed books in the West. The Seminary locked the Bible in a vault for security reasons and only placed it on view under guard on a small number of occasions. The seminary's Gutenberg Bible acquired in 1898 was notable for being the first incomplete copy restored to completeness after a forged leaf was replaced with an authentic one in 1953.With the bookplate of the General Theological Seminary Library to the pastedowns. In cloth bindings. Externally excellent. Boards lightly age toned to perimeters. Shelf wear to back strip tail with bumps to back strip heads. Library labels to front and rear pastedowns. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally exceptionally clean and bright with the odd handling marks to text block fore edge. Very Good Indeed The General Theological Seminary hardcover

In-16° (19x13 cm), pp (2), 56, (2), brossura decorata muta coeva. Ottimo e fresco esemplare.
