Karl Bernhard Zoeppritz 1881-1908 geophysicist who made important contributions to seismology in particular the formulation of the Zoeppritz equations. These equations relate the amplitudes of P-waves and S-waves at each side of an interface between two arbitrary elastic media as a function of the angle of incidence and are largely used in reflection seismology for determining structure and properties of the subsurface. Using Wiechert's theoretical work and data from earthquakes including the 1905 Kangra earthquake 1905 Calabria earthquake and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake Zoeppritz's most important early contribution was the construction of travel-time curves - and their associated velocity-depth functions - for P-waves S-waves and surface waves recognising for the first time that body waves are reflected and converted at discontinuities. These curves were later used by other members of the research group Ludwig Carl Geiger and Beno Gutenberg as well as the British astronomer and seismologist Herbert Hall Turner at the International Seismological Summary. The related ill-posed inverse problem of inferring a discrete velocity distribution representing the layers of the crust and mantle was solved by fellow Göttingen mathematician Gustav Herglotz. unknown

1966959F36New York City: The General Theological Seminary 1966 . Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 12.5" by 8.5". None. A very scarce privately produced facsimile of the General Theological Seminary's own copy of the Gutenberg Bible produced by the Seminary themselves. A two volume very scarce facsimile of The General Theological Seminary of New York's own copy of the Gutenberg Bible. It appears that the Seminary produced this monochrome facsimile with no intention of wider distribution. The Seminary's Gutenberg Bible was sold in 1978 for $2.2 million to the Württembergische Landesbibliothek in Stuttgart Germany.Present here is a two volume facsimile of the Seminary's copy of the Bible the earliest major book printed in Europe using mass-produced metal movable type. It marked the start of the Gutenberg Revolution and the age of printed books in the West. The Seminary locked the Bible in a vault for security reasons and only placed it on view under guard on a small number of occasions. The seminary's Gutenberg Bible acquired in 1898 was notable for being the first incomplete copy restored to completeness after a forged leaf was replaced with an authentic one in 1953.With the bookplate of the General Theological Seminary Library to the pastedowns. In cloth bindings. Externally excellent. Boards lightly age toned to perimeters. Shelf wear to back strip tail with bumps to back strip heads. Library labels to front and rear pastedowns. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally exceptionally clean and bright with the odd handling marks to text block fore edge. Very Good Indeed The General Theological Seminary hardcover
