This Johnston's chief work spelled variously Johnston Johnson and Johnstone "appeared in four volumes between 1760 and 1765. The first and second volumes were written during a visit to the earl of Mount-Edgcumbe in Devon and had already gone through three editions before Johnstone was prevailed on to write the concluding two and the whole work was frequently reprinted during the eighteenth century and translated into French. An excoriating satire that won Johnstone respect as a wit but few friends the novel is set roughly during the period of the Seven Years' War 1757–63 and pretends to reveal political secrets and to expose the private profligacy of many of the well-known—and highly colourful—public characters of the time." (Reliure d’éditeur) 199 pp.Curiosité typographique, ce livre est entièrement imprimé en sténographie. Émile Duployé, né en 1833 à Liesse Notre-Dame (Aisne), mort à Saint-Maur des Fossés en 1912, est un ecclésiastique qui, avec ses frères, a inventé une ingénieuse méthode d’écriture sténographique qui porte son nom. En 1860, l’abbé Duployé publie son alphabet et sa méthode qui comporte à l’origine 29 signes, et par la suite des abréviations conventionnelles seront introduites pour atteindre les vitesses de prise requises dans les domaines parlementaire et judiciaire. La sténographie Duployé fut pratiquée et enseignée en France au sud de la Loire et en Suisse jusque dans les années 1980 alors que Nord pratiquait le système Prévost-Delaunay (Janine Tissot). Les 3 premières pages qui précèdent le titre donnent l’alphabet et les règles de la méthode Duployé. Titre imprimé en or, toutes les pages sont dans un encadrement de feuillages imprimé en rouge. Nombreux bandeaux, culs-de-lampe, lettrines et illustrations, dont 4 à pleine page. L’abbé L. Baguet était curé de Béhéricourt (Oise).
