Three volumes. pp. 167; 192; 183. Frontis and titles engraved by Bicknell. Large 8vo.Original vellum backed boards. Top edge gold. Limited to only 400 copies. Engraved Ex Libris of Truman H. Newberry. Fine English text edition issued by the Bibliophile Society The owner of this set Truman H. Newberry was a Secretary of the Navy under Theodore Roosevelt. He was elected to the Senate in 1918. On Mar ch 20, 1920, Newberry was convicted on charges of spending $3,750 to secure his Senate election (quite amazing, considering modern ideas about expenditures to secure political office). The U.S. Supreme Court overturned this decision (May 2, 1921) on the grounds that the U.S. Senate exceeded its powers in attempting to regulate primary elections. By a vote of 46 to 41 (January 12, 1922), the Senate declared Newberry to have been duly elected in 1918. On November 18, two days before the start of the 3rd session of the 67th Congress, Newberry resigned as certain members resumed their efforts to unseat him. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W118

Two volumes, complete. The "goig" is a typical Catalan art form ("gozo" in Spanish), dating back to the 16th century. It is a broadsheet with a printed poem dedicated to a specific saint, and illustrated with woodcuts or metalcuts. During the 20th century Ricard Vives Sabate was the only artist who kept this tradition alive. These two portfolios contain ten of his goigs, dedicated to those saints most venerated in Catalonia: Sant Jordi (St. George), La Nostra Senyora de Montserrat (Our Lady of Montserrat), Santa Eulalia, Santa Cecilia, Sant Ricard, La Mare de Deu de la Merce, Santa Anna, Sant Josep Oriol, Sant Oleguer, and Sant Lluis. Each of the goigs is printed by hand and illustrated with several metalcuts. From a total edition of 255 copies, each of these portfolios is one of only FIVE copies with the goigs printed on parchment and beautifully hand-illuminated in color and heightened with gold. Furthermore, each of the goigs is signed by the artist. Folio, hand-made paper wraps (also decorated with hand-illuminated metalcuts). Fine and bright, with no defects.
The second volume (of two?). Thick 8vo. pp. 501-862, (50), 224 + Engraved folding map, and engraved portrait plate. On the rear board is an ink drawing of a Tudor rose. Painted under the brown fore-edge, and visible only when fanned, is the following text: "TULLIUM M. C. JULIUS CAESAR CICERONEM OB E GRECIAS EJUS / DOMITUM SALVUM ET INCOLUMEM / ESSE JOBEMUS C. JA BOIENUS / NOSTRIS ARMIS VIRTUTEQUE". Later manuscript vellum spine label: "INCERTA" (meaning uncertain or doubtful). Was this perhaps a critic's warning about the accuracy of the notes on Caesar that Scaliger gathered together? A UNIQUE AND ENTIRELY REMARKABLE ITEM. CHEST 2/2
