19851116New York: The Limited Editions Club 1985. Various places but mostly New York 1929-1985. A massive assemblage of 528 individual titles and 724 volumes. This collection stops in 1985 and the titles published in the successive years were greatly decreased with only 50 more titles published. Meaning that completing this collection might still be very difficult but certainly not impossible. The vast majority of the collection is in near fine to fine condition. The Limited Editions Club LEC was founded in 1929 by George Macy to publish high-quality illustrated books for a membership of 1500. The club successfully produced 12 books annually under George Macy and his wife Helen until 1971. However from 1971 to 1978 the LEC faced financial challenges and underwent five ownership changes losing the Heritage Press which had published trade editions of their books. Each individual required 'a visa from the State Department an affidavit of financial support an affidavit of moral sponsorship vouching that he or she was in imminent danger and would not be inimical to U.S. interests biographical sketches and letters of reference proving identities and the above and at least $400 for ocean passage'. In conjunction with Curt Valentin himself a beneficiary of the Barrs' help Kay Sage she married Yves Tanguy another beneficiary in 1940 Kay Boyle and the Emergency Rescue Committee. Although no exact list of all of those who benefited from the help of the Barrs and the ERC remains extant the majority of those who exhibited in 'Artists in Exile' did and the present catalogue represents a remarkable testament to their work their efforts and their humanity.The exhibition - perhaps an unlikely one given the range of participants and their differing outlooks temperaments and sympathies - was held at Pierre Matisse 41 East 57th Street New York from 3rd - 28th March 1942; each of the artists contributed one work undertaken after their arrival in the US those by Masson and Lipchitz were courtesy of the Buchholz Gallery.'Pierre Matisse did not run after publicity but there were times when publicity ran after him. That is what happened in March 1942 when the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York opened a show called 'Artists in Exile'. The title came fraught with pathos. So did the timing . The word 'exile' had sharp teeth . As he wrote to his father . 'I stayed in town to hang the exiles' show today instead of tomorrow. I took this precaution because all the exhibitors are right here in town. You know what they are like. They'd insist on giving me advice and making sure that their own painting had a very goood place . They number fourteen in all and I got them together for a group photograph. As most of them didn't speak to one another when they were in France I was afraid there would be trouble when they were all thrown together . '. Pierre Matisse quoted by John Russell.'In no sense were they a band of brothers. But they did all agree to huddle together before the camera . Given the variety of age instinct outlook nationality and relative achievement that was in question the show was necessarily the equivalent of alphabet soup. It was not likely that the fourteen artists in question would ever again be in the same room at the same time. Not only were they a tight fit in the space available but solidarity was minimal. And yet for an uneasy quarter of an hour along with other unlikely conjunctions André Masson sat next to Piet Mondrian and Marc Chagall sat between Max Ernst and Fernand Léger. There was zero eye contact. Unsmiling they sat stiff and still and stared straight ahead.' Working in concert with the Emergency Rescue Commitee ERC a group of New York-based activists MoMA staff including director Alfred H. Barr Jr. and his wife art historian Margaret Scholari Barr who led the initiative at the Museum helped their peers in Europe secure the papers and funds necessary to immigrate to the US . Scholari Barr made 'rescue' operations her full-time occupation in these years . Artists including André Breton Marc Chagall Max Ernst and Piet Mondrian were able to relocate here through the aid of the Barrs and the ERC.' 1903TB33156Chicago: Lakeside Press 1903 to 2019. The first 26 volumes which includes the 1915 reprint of The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin of this complete set are in very good to near fine condition and are all bound in dark green cloth covered boards. None of the dark green volumes have prior owner's names or markings in them. The 25 volumes bound in red are all in at least very good condition or better and none of them have any prior ownership markings of any kind. All 25 volumes of the "blues" are in fine condition; although four of the years 1974-1977 have a prior owner's raised embossed seal on the front end pages. All of the "browns" are in fine condition; however two volumes 1978 and 1980 have a prior owner's raised embossed seal on the front end pages; and 1979 has the ghost of a removed book plate from the front paste down. The last seven volumes of the "browns" are still within the publisher's original shrink wrap. The final 25 volumes in the teal cloth binding are all fine and all are still contained in the publisher's shrink wrap. This is a remarkable collection as it is a complete run of the Classics and each of the volumes are in such attractive collectible condition. Lakeside Press hardcover

A continuous 23 year run of selected sections from one of the 20th century's most significant architectural magazines uniformly bound by Bayntun Riviere of Bath. The sections included from the magazine are those concerning the design of either real planned or hypothetical buildings. Sections such as the 'newsletter' or 'manufacturers' literature' are not included. Thus there is a streamlined focus on design content. The relevant sections from each month's magazine are bound together by year with each volume running from January to December as one would expect. The pagination is truncated as a result: for most months the pagination will run from roughly 50-120. Thus there are twelve separately paginated sections in each volume corresponding loosely to those figures. Replete with illustrations both photographic and draughted. Colour photos become more frequent from the 1957 volume onwards. There is a general American focus but the wider world is not neglected. Every imaginable sort of building is covered from schools to hotels to offices and houses. Contemporary design is rigorously and intelligently discussed in the accompanying articles which situate the featured buildings within their wider social and practical context. New materials and technology are explored and ambitious theoretical designs are analysed. The architectural discussions by their very nature provide a fascinating angle on the wider cultural economic and political world of their particular year. For example one will find the design and utility of bomb shelters discussed at the height of the cold war and then 'omnibuildings' eagerly anticipated in the late 60s. In 1969 there is a feature titled 'Machine Art Past and Technology Art Present' while in 1970 the influence of modern technology on the design of movie theatres is explored. A beautifully bound unparallelled primary source for the history of architecture as well as for socio-economic history in the mid to late twentieth century. In half morocco by Bayntun Riviere. Complete in two volumes.A vanishingly scarce contemporary account of the 1913 Senghenydd colliery disaster. Important original source for this awful disaster. .Held only at the National Library of Wales. These two volumes comprise of the lengthy minutes of proceedings regarding this disaster in the Cardiff Law Courts as the government inquired into the causes and circumstances of the explosion. The monumental case was overseen by Richard Redmayne among others. Redmayne was a mining engineer who became the first Chief Inspector of Mines leading this and other investigations into mining disasters advocating for greater mine safety. Redmayne was chiefly assisted in this investigation by Evan Williams and Robert Similie. This investigation ran for three days before adjourning and reopening for another 13 days during which 21839 questions were put to 50 witnesses all of which are included in these two extensive volumes.Appearances during the investigation included John Sankey Clement Edwards W. P. Nicholas William Brace and E. Williams.Offering a unique and scarce to see exploration of the disaster only two and a half months after the incident which killed 439 miners. The Senghenydd colliery disaster occured on the 14th October 1913 and it still to this day the worst mining accident in Britain.This work was compiled from the shorthand notes taken by the 'Western Mail' reporting staff.A unique first hand account of the worst British mining disaster in history. A beautiful association copy from Nobel Prize winner physiologist Ivan Pavlov known for his work on classical conditioning to his pupil - Harvard educator and a world-renowned neuropathologist in his own right Paul Yakovlev. The book is signed: "Ot avtora" "From the author" on the title page. On the front pastedown Yakovlev has taped a photograph of himself seated with Pavlov with a quote in Russian and in English of their topic of discussion at the time the photo was taken: "Subcortive ganglia actuate the cerebral cortex." A second copy of the same photograph is loosely laid in the book. A third photo of aging Pavlov is taped to the first free page. The front endpaper bears Yakovlev's signature and a lengthy note: "This is personal copy of Prof. Ivan Petrovich Pavlov with a notation in his own hand: "from the author." Sent to me in Paris from Leningrad in the Spring of 1924 before the publication date in 1925. I cannot account for this." Two Yakovlev stamps are present - one is his own personal "Dr. Paul I. Possibly the most influential and famous of the post-revolutionary art and literature journals Zhar-Ptitsa Firebird was first printed in Berlin in 1921. A total of 14 issues were published at irregular intervals from 1921 to 1926. A magnificent journalistic endeavor it represented the Russian culture abroad and challenged the boundaries between the Bolshevik agents and the immigrant intellectuals at the time. Contributors included Konstantin Somov â a brilliant artist who immigrated to the United States after the revolution but finding the atmosphere âabsolutely alien to his artâ he eventually ended up in Paris; Alexander Benois â the founding member of Mir Iskusstva; Ivan Bilibin â the illustrator and stage designer who moved to Paris after the October Revolution but longing for his country returned home in 1936 to ultimately die during the Siege of Leningrad; Natalia Goncharova â the great niece of Alexander Pushkin and one of the most revered Russian Avant-garde artists â and many others including all the members of Mir Iskusstva. 193381752Moscow; New York; Leningrad: Various; Intourist 1933-1966. 90 with a few additional duplicates pieces of ephemeral material ranging from page copiously illustrated tour guides produced in the US on behalf of the USSR tourist initiatives to single sheet recital tickets and programs clearly produced to the lowest costs and standards many of which were not intended to last more than a single occasion. <br /> <br /> Condition is largely Very Good with a few of the pieces having some wear or damp staining a number of pieces have small "Book Sale" ink stamps presumably pieces that originated in the same collection and were then donated somewhere for sale. A fascinating and varied collection of theatrical and tourist ephemera with much of it originating in one of the most dynamic and experimental periods in Soviet performing arts. <br /> <br /> "Good intentions do not play a role in art. Lunacharski. <br /> <br /> Intourist was originally formed in 1929 as "Ð’ÑероÑÑийÑкое акционерное общеÑтво по приему иноÑтранных туриÑтов Ð’ÐО «ИнтуриÑт»" which more or less translates as the "All-Russian Joint-Stock Company for the Acceptance of Foreign Tourists". It was far more than a travel agency however controlling as it did almost all tourist access from the West into the USSR and operating on a number of levels to carefully control and curate the view of Soviet Russia that was presented to the rest of the world. The president of Intourist in 1933 Wilhelm Kurz of the Central Committee was the first USSR visitor to be formally accepted by the US when he visited immediately after the nation had been granted recognition. Higher officials in Intourist actually "иноÑтранный туриÑÑ‚" with the popular name simply being a contraction of the Russian language phrasing of "Foreign Tourist" or "Innostrannyy Turist" tended to be secure and solid party officials whose loyalty to the state was rarely questioned the main reason for this being that their interactions with foreign nations and nationals increased the possibility of defection; something Intourist learned early on when their UK representative in London Aron Sheinman declined to return to the Motherland when summoned and became a British citizen in 1939 which was probably rather good timing. <br /> <br /> Intourist in the 1930's midway through another Soviet Five Year Plan was given the brief to attract wealthy Western culture vultures and businesspeople to the USSR and display to them with astonishing attention to detail how much better the Soviet people were doing than their Western counterparts whilst also planting the seeds for future collaboration. The US was in the midst of the Depression not that the people paying $465 for their trip tickets in 1934 needed to worry much about that but being met from your luxurious "Soviet Ship" and ferried to your Moscow hotel by a fleet of brand new Lincoln town cars for two solid weeks of high culture and fine dining being escorted every step of the way by guides and assistants must have made quite an impression. The number of Americans who could afford a new Lincoln was pretty small at that point and the number who could travel even smaller so the Intourist agenda was aimed to within a minute of accuracy at the Westerners who could do them the most good; the rich the famous and the culturally influential. There's nothing accidental about the Intourist literature being filled with Margaret Bourke White's photographs and commentaries from notable Western culture critics and authorities. <br /> <br /> Tales abound from the Western tourists able to take advantage of Intourist's services of constant surveillance an absence of any freedom of movement usually disguised by the concept that there was so much to see in the Wonderland of the USSR that wandering off would just mean you missed the best parts and some very strict non-fraternisation policies that only eased off after 1953 when Stalin's strictures against marrying non-Soviet citizens were rolled back. <br /> <br /> At the height of the Cold War a period parts of this collection span Intourist was essentially an arm of the KGB rather than a tour company; hotels were bugged drivers recorded all conversations the guides reported even the most casual of disclosures to their superiors and no opportunity was lost to gather information on the one hand and disseminate pro-soviet propaganda on the other. Itineraries of Intourist tours for the period show very clearly that even the First Class tourists paying an eye-watering premium were not permitted anything other than the most token periods of 'freedom' with one Moscow-Leningrad tour timetabling only 8 hours of 'unsupervised' time spread across 10 days beginning at 8am and ending at around 11pm. <br /> <br /> All forms of Soviet culture from collective farm visits to mountain hikes to visits to the Bolshoi served a concrete purpose; to showcase the USSR's successes whilst concealing any of its blemishes. Impromptu hangouts with the actors at the Moscow State Theatre were in fact carefully scripted and choreographed encounters with no dissonant or dissident notes night life was restricted to a carefully chosen list of venues and wherever possible visitors were kept moving from one location to another in quick succession emphasizing the cavalcade of wonders whilst denying any insights that might be gathered by more leisurely viewing. Looking behind the scenery would only result in you seeing more scenery. <br /> <br /> "in the alternate universe that was the Soviet Union the 'giant squid' of the Soviet state would engulf the traveler. There were myriad ways in which the Soviet tourist monopoly Intourist both hindered the foreigner and shielded him from the vagaries of Soviet material life and above all the psychological costs of 'routine surveillance'. and the barriers the Soviets erected between foreigners and unvarnished and uncomfortable truths about the Soviet Union."
