1865008921Various locations 1865. Very good. Nine letters written to Stephen H. Gregory a member of D Company 39th New York Volunteer Infantry. Eight were written during April and May of 1865 while Gregory was recovering from wounds at the Homewood Hospital in Washington D. C. The ninth letter is pre-war. Two of the letters are enclosed in mailing envelopes with indistinct postal markings; one of the envelopes is franked with a 3-cent rose Washington stamp Scott #65 the stamp is missing from the other. Gregory's discharge certificate is also included. The letters are all in nice shape; the certificate has some storage folds and minor wear. <br /><br />The letters are primarily queries from family and friends about his wound "Stephen you had not aut to wash your wound after eny other persons wound for fear of the gang green" his general health "shugar making" and the death and wounding of other local soldiers mixed with considerable hope that Stephen would soon be able to return home. <br /><br />One letter however also references the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and the hunt for John Wilkes Booth: "las Friday they is a corpral and three privates to the depo looking for the man kiled abrham linkin and they say that they git 3000 if they git him". <br /><br />The 39th New York Infantry the Garibaldi Guard was organized in New York City in the Spring of 1861 by Colonel Frederick George D'Utassy under special authority from the War Department. Initially the unit was divided into eleven companies each primarily composed of men of different national heritage; three companies were Hungarian three were German one Swiss one Italian one French one Spanish and one Portuguese. In the Summer of 1864 four companies A through D were mustered out however a new D Company was mustered into service that October from upstate New York. <br /><br />Gregory was from Lisbon New York and joined D Company while it was being organized at Malone New York. D Company fought in the Appomattox Campaign during March and April and it was during this time that Private Gregory was wounded. Gregory's military records are sparse but they do confirm that he was hospitalized for four weeks although they do not specify where or how badly he was wounded but based on the dates of the letters it must have been some time in April shortly be General Lee surrendered. <br /><br />A nice collection of letters to a wounded soldier clearly evidencing the love and concern of his family. <br /><br /> books

Fine as this copy was recently rebound in black cloth covered boards with gilt text stamping on the spine with new end sheets a resewn binding rounded and backed. The text block is in very good condition and is now tight and the pages are generally clean and free of any heavy tanning or foxing. A small octavo measuring 7 1/2" by 4 1/2" with faint dampness stains running from pages 173 to 240. The full title reads; "The Mariner's Library or Voyager's Companion. Containing Narratives of the Most Popular Voyages from the time of Columbus to the present day; with accounts of remarkable shipwrecks naval adventures the whale-fishery &c: The whole interspersed with Numerous Sketches of Nautical Life". 492 pages of text. Illustrated with a frontispiece engraving of the Constitution and seventeen other engravings throughout the text. Sabin 44591 but refers to 1834 publication by C. Gaylord of Boston. Leather on spine is missing over title. End papers are browned along edges have some rips. Moderate foxing is present throughout text heavy in some spots as well as some spots of soiling or damp stains occasionally over some text. A few rips along page edges or dog-eared corners. This is a reading copy only but despite its flaws it is still very readable. Red marbled boards with 3/4 red leather. 1925TB22610Salem: Marine Research Society 1925. First Edition. First printing Very good- in 1/4 brown cloth and marbled paper covered boards with gilt text on the spine and illustrated end sheets. The tips of the boards are covered in vellum and the top edge of the text block is gilt. The cloth at the head of the spine shows a 1/4" deep closed tear with shallow related chipping of`1/32" on either side. There is the ghost of a prior owner's book plate on the first free end page. The title page and many of the illustrated plates within the text show mild tanning and offsetting to the facing pages. Without its issued dust jacket. One of only ninety-seven "vellum" copies printed and this copy is identified as number "95". An untold number of plain cloth and paper copies were printed. 353 pages of text including an index and illustrated with 2 maps a frontispiece and 30 black and white photographs and engravings. The text contains five narratives of accounts of ship wreck and abandonment in the south Atlantic and in the South Pacific. With an introduction by Captain Elliot Snow.
