After Kippis died in 1795 it was taken on by Thomas Morgan 17521821. George Gregory edited it and changed its Whig politics to Tory at the time of the Addington ministry. Collated volume X's The Orphan is lacking its two plates. Direct from the Regency library of Elizabeth Greenly later Lady Elizabeth Coffin Greenly. Elizabeth Greenly born at Titley Court Herefordshire was a noted and varied collector. She kept prolific diaries from 1784 until her death in 1839 which included her responses to current events and occasions in her daily life. Among the diaries many names and anecdotes of celebrities of the time appear including Lord Byron Marie Antoinette Mary Wollstonecraft and Hannah More. She was known to comment on customs of foreign countries to which she and her friends had travelled and had a keen interest in scientific discoveries and advancements including medicine and archaeology. The Greenly library contents show Elizabeth Greenly's numerous interests including: Welsh causes Science topography travel Bibliana and literature particularly female poets. The library contains many first editions of contemporary works and many are signed or contain her bookplate. The library contained over 1000 volumes which show the diversity and depth of her interests and give an insight into the life of this fascinating collector. These works come directly from the library of the Titley Court estate. Volumes I and XXI are lacking the bottom two spine labels. Volumes XVIII XVIX and XXVII are lacking middle spine label. Volumes X XVI XVII XX and XXII are lacking top two spine labels. Volume XXXIV is lacking bottom spine label. Volume XXV has all three spine labels. Rear board to volume XVI has a crack 2.5" long diagonally upwards from the tail of the spine. Front joint to volume V is starting but firm. Rear joint to volume XVII is starting but firm. Small crack to front joint of volume X. Front hinges to volumes V and VII are tender with cords showing. Both hinges to volume X are tender with the cords showing. Front hinges to volumes IV and XXV and XXVII are slightly strained but firm. Rear hinge to volume VXVI is tender with cords showing. The textblock to volume X has detached from spine at the rear hinge though the pastedown is still intact and firmly bound to textblock. Internally volumes I II III IV V XI XII XVIIXVIII XVIX XX XXII XXI XXV XXIII XXIV XXVII XXXIV XXXV and XXXVI are all firmly bound. Volume VI is generally firmly bound though strained in places. Two plates and the first six leaves to volume VII are disbound but present the rest of the volume is otherwise generally firmly bound. The front endpapers to volume X are detatched from textblock though still attached to pastedown. Pages 81-84 and a plate of Cato to volume X are disbound but present. The overall binding to volume X is weak. Rear marbled endpaper and pastedown to volume XVI are detached but present with the remaining endpapers weak. Overall volume XVI is generally firmly bound though strained in places. Overall pages are generally bright. Small scorch mark to endpaper and final leaf of volume II doesn't affect the text. Tear to bottom corner of the leaf ix/x to volume V's Fair Penitent does not affect text. Tear to final leaf of volume XXVII affecting the running title. Tear to corner of pp 31-36 of volume XXXIV's The Ambitious Stepmother affecting the edge of 12 lines of text. Spotting to volume VII. Scattered spots throughout volume XII. From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature history and music. A collection of uniformly bound theatrical works all written as they were performed at the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane Covent Garden. Regulated from the prompt books by permission of the managers boasting a range of genres such as comedies tragedies and comic opera's. Performed over the 1790's many of the performances would have been performed in the larger 'new' Drury Lane. The theatre was in need of updating by the end of the 18th century and was demolished in 1791. The third theatre was designed by Henry Holland and opened on 12 March 1794. Plays such as 'The Recruiting Officer' by George Farquhar and Theodosius or The Force of Love by Nathaniel Lee would have been performed at the temporary King's Theatre in the Haymarket. Featuring a frontispiece and engraved title page to each play. Frequent playwrights include Beaumount and Fletcher Isaac Bickerstaff N. Rowe and Colley Cibber who was one of the directors of the 'new' larger theatre. Includes a copy of 'The Beggars Opera' By John Gay and 'A School for Wives adapted' by Hugh Kelly. In speckled calf bindings. Externally rather rubbed with shelfwear to the head and tail of spines and extremities. Many spines are cracked with strained hinges and joints. Six of the volumes have boards held by the cords only and seven have detached boards. Internally generally firmly bound although 'The Country Lasses' has last leaves absent. 'The Morning Bride' 'Oroonoko' 'The West Indian' and 'King Charles I' has some marginal tide marks. Pages are generally bright with light scattered spotting. Complete in six volumes and illustrated with engraved vignettes to title pages head and tail pieces and some sheet music to the rear of volume IV. A charming anthology of poems. An important set in very good condition. Robert Dodsley 1703 - September 23 1764 was an English bookseller and miscellaneous writer. He was born near Mansfield Nottinghamshire where his father was master of the free school. He is said to have been apprenticed to a stocking-weaver in Mansfield from whom he ran away going into service as a footman. In 1729 Dodsley published his first work Servitude: a Poem written by a Footman with a preface and postscript ascribed to Daniel Defoe; and a collection of short poems A Muse in Livery or the Footman's Miscellany was published by subscription in 1732 Dodsley's patrons comprising many persons of high rank. This was followed by a satirical farce called The Toyshop Covent Garden 1735 in which the toymaker indulges in moral observations on his wares a hint which was probably taken from Thomas Randolph's Conceited Pedlar. The profits accruing from the sale of his works enabled Dodsley to establish himself with the help of his friends--Alexander Pope lent him £100--as a bookseller at the "Tully's Head" in Pall Mall in 1735. Dodsley is however best known as the editor of two collections: Select Collection of Old Plays 12 vols. 1744; 2nd edition with notes by Isaac Reed 12 vols. 1780; 4th edition by William Carew Hazlitt 1874-1876 15 vols.; and A collection of Poems by Several Hands 1748 3 vols. which passed through many editions. In 1737 his King and the Miller of Mansfield a "dramatic tale" of King Henry II was produced at Drury Lane and received with much applause; the sequel Sir John Cockle at Court a farce appeared in 1738. Rebacked with leather spines and original calf leather boards. Externally sound. Minor rubbing to the head and tail of the spine to the board and also to the extremities with a small amount of loss.
