Given his literary circle he was able to fill three volumes of poetry by the time of the first edition on 15 January 1748.Including poems from Samuel Johnson Thomas Gray David Garrick Lady Mary Wortley Montague Horace Walpole Joseph and Thomas Warton James Thomson Elizabeth Carter Pope and many others. The first illustrated work to be published including 17 pictures maps and table. On 5 April 1730 500 copies were published. Lacking one map.</p><p>5<em> Acâibü'l-makdûr fî nevâîbi Timûr</em> The History of the Calamity of Timur. Translated into Turkish by Nazmizade Hüseyin Murteza d. 1720 from İbn Arabşâh's d. 1450 Arabic work relating the conquests of Timur. Prepared by Jean-Baptiste Holderman d. 1730 1000 copies of this book were published between March and November 1730.</p><p>9 <em>Usûlü'l-hikem fî nizâmi'l-ümem</em> Rational Suggestions on the Nation's Array. Written by İbrahim Müteferrika; 500 copies of this work was published on February 1732.</p><p>10 <em>Füyûzât-ı Mıknatisiyye</em> The Benefits of the Compass. 500 copies were published on 27th of February 1732. The second edition of this fascinating and scarce work. With treaties such as 'The Treaty of Munster 1648' 'the Peace Between England France and England and Holland in 1667' 'Treaty of Nimeguen 1678'' 'The First Grand Alliance 1689' 'Treaty for our Netherland Trade between Henry VII and the Duke of Burgundy'and 'Treaty between Queen Elizabeth and the French King Relating to Calais'. Volume II appears to be lacking preface and contents has been bound without. This means it is lacking pages i-XXII and two unpaginated leaves according to collation from ESTC. With extra two gatherings Gg and Hh bound between original pages 456 and 457 as called for to volume IV. In full calf bindings with gilt stamping to the spine. Externally generally smart. Patches of light rubbing to the spines and to the joints. Small losses at the head and tail of spines to most volumes. Small crack to head of front joint to vol I with the hinge slightly strained but firm. Crack to the entirety of front joint to volume II and to the head and tail of rear joint. Front hinge to volume II is tender with cords showing the rear hinge is the same. Small loss to the rear board of volume II. Crack to the front joint of volume III and to the head of rear joint to volume III. Hinges are tender to volume III. Small cracks to the head and tail of joint to volume IV. Hinges to volume IV are tender. Title page to volume IV is closely cropped with final publisher and the date lacking half does not affect any other pages. Internally all volumes are firmly bound. Small amount of worming to the rear pastedown and final 377 onwards to volume I. Very minor does not affect any of the text. Worming throughout volume II at the head and tail of pages worse to the first and last few pages only affecting a few letters to words of pages 2-6. Pages are slightly age toned in places. The Peerage Bill was a measure proposed by the British Whig government led by James Stanhope and Charles Spencer. The measure would have largely halted the creation of new peerages limiting membership of the house of Lords. Bound to the start is a portion of a nineteenth century reference work on the peerage bill. There is a list of contemporary works issued against and for the bill. A prior owner has annotated this. Comprising: "The Plebeians by a Member of the House of Commons" 1719 by Sir Richard Steele ESTC reference no T114589 the sixth edition issued the same year as the first edition. The Plebeians no I-IV all here are against the bill."The Thoughts of a Member of the Lower House in Relation to a Project for Restraining and Limiting the Power of the Crown" 1719. This work was issued anonymously. A contemporary owner has written the author to be Robert Walpole however the ESTC notes the author to be John Trenchard. ESTC reference no T50188. Matthew Gregory Lewis 1775 1818 was an English novelist and dramatist often referred to as "Monk" Lewis because of the success of his classic Gothic novel The Monk. The Minister is a translation from Friedrich Schiller's Kabale und Liebe. George Colman 1732 - 1794 was an English dramatist and essayist usually called "the Elder" and sometimes "George the First" to distinguish him from his son George Colman the Younger. Colman's lighter pieces included The Manager in Distress 30 May 1780 a short theatrical satire where he portrayed himself as the playhouse manager "little Dapperwit". Bound in half calf with marbled paper covered boards and gilt lettering. There is some wear to the extremities including some bumping.The hinges are starting to crack. The binding is tight and firm. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark or spot. Several of the pages have excessive handling marks as shown in the photographs above. Pages are bright 'True Copies' a little age-toned and generally clean with some spots. Pages of 'True Copies' are a touch edge worn.
