Possibly the most influential and famous of the post-revolutionary art and literature journals Zhar-Ptitsa Firebird was first printed in Berlin in 1921. A total of 14 issues were published at irregular intervals from 1921 to 1926. A magnificent journalistic endeavor it represented the Russian culture abroad and challenged the boundaries between the Bolshevik agents and the immigrant intellectuals at the time. Contributors included Konstantin Somov â a brilliant artist who immigrated to the United States after the revolution but finding the atmosphere âabsolutely alien to his artâ he eventually ended up in Paris; Alexander Benois â the founding member of Mir Iskusstva; Ivan Bilibin â the illustrator and stage designer who moved to Paris after the October Revolution but longing for his country returned home in 1936 to ultimately die during the Siege of Leningrad; Natalia Goncharova â the great niece of Alexander Pushkin and one of the most revered Russian Avant-garde artists â and many others including all the members of Mir Iskusstva. The illustrations both on the wraps and all the cartoons were dubiously based on the Pontiacâs Rebellion â the 1763 war launched by a loose confederation of Native American tribes from the Great Lakes Region against the British following the French and Indian War 1754 â 1763 that was named after the Ottawa leader Pontiac who was the most prominent of the leaders of the conflict. Stunning bright custom rug designs by the preeminent designer and supplier of rugs and furniture to the rich and famous of the 19th and the early 20th centuries for the family of businessman and timber baron Lowell Thomas Murray of Tacoma WA. W. & J. Sloane was founded in 1843 in New York by Scottish-American brothers William and John Sloane. They would become the first to import oriental rugs into the US and the first to coin themselves "Interior Decorators and Home Furnishers." The company opened a branch in San Francisco in 1915 originally to furnish the pavilions at the Panama-Pacific Exposition but staying on for the demand for their products. They prospered and catered to the American elite until 1955 when the business control left the hands of the direct descendants of the Sloane brothers. The firm over-expanded lowered its quality and prices and ultimately filed for bankruptcy in 1985. L. T. Murray Sr. moved West from Ohio in 1906. He would found the West Fork Timber Company the Pan Pacific Trading Company and the Pan Pacific International Corporation and would become President of the Pacific Logging Congress established in 1909 to provide technical education about the forest industry. A what appears to be the only issue from an intended series the booklet was published by the Organization of Ukrainian Emigre Women in Germany. The organization was initially founded at a DP displaced persons camp in Munich but would later spread through other camps in the American and British occupational zones after the end of the Second World War. Their goal was to provide educational and medical help to boost nationalism and morale to help organize classes and workshops and to act as liaisons to their compatriots with the Americans and Brits. The book highlighting the lives of prominent Ukrainian women was devoted to Olena Pchilka 1849 â 1930 pseudonym for Olha Petrivna Kosach - publisher author ethnographer and civil activist and the Staritski-Cherniakhivski sisters - Mariia Oksana and Liudmyla - famed authors and actresses.
