This copy is a 1957 second printing of the 1956 first edition. 310 pages. Black and white photographic plates. "For thirty-seven years Harry M. Hoxsey has been one of the most controversial figures in American medicine. During that period thousands of patients - many of them declared "hopeless" by their own doctors - have taken the Hoxsey treatment. Today, five, ten, in some instances twenty years later, a suprising number of them are still alive, apparently in good health, with no discernible evidence of the deadly disease. They hail Hoxsey as a modern 'miracle man'. On the other hand, he has been branded as 'America's Number One Cancer Quack and Charlatan' - his treatment denounced as worthless... Convinced his treatment can save as many as eight out of ten cancer victims if applied in time, Dr. Hoxsey has undertaken in this book to bring his startling story in full before the public for the first time." - from dust jacket. Average wear to unmarked book. Binding sound. Pages have yellowed with age. Blemish on top edge of textblock is 1.5 inch by 0.5 inch. Somewhat above-average wear to dust jacket which is now preserved in glossy new archival-grade Brodart cover. A sound copy of this important medical history. Book

1927158121Shanghai: Kelly & Walsh 1927. First edition first printing with an appealing provenance of this collection of short stories written to correct the many fantastical western portrayals of China. "Although they are purely fiction they do present truthfully local colour customs and characteristics and it is hoped that they will help to dispel the delusions and possibly some of the illusions held abroad about this land in which we live" p. iii. The Shanghai Short Story Club was founded in 1923 by the journalist and academic Verne Dyson 1879-1971 as a salon for published and unpublished expatriate writers. Its first collection Short Stories was published in 1924; today its publications are uncommon in commerce. This copy is inscribed on the front pastedown "A. W. Slater Shanghai 1928". Arthur William Slater 1897-1970 was an insurance agent who worked in the city throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Below his ownership inscription is the decorative bookplate of the sinologist Keith Stevens 1926-2015. A British scholar-diplomat he was an authority on Chinese religion and iconography writing 36 articles and two books on the subject including the definitive Chinese Gods: The Unseen World of Spirits and Demons 1997. Fittingly his bookplate shows the Buddhist deity Wei Tuo the "protector of books" and a guardian "against fire destructive insects and dishonest borrowers." Octavo. Facsimiles of each contributor's signature serving as headpiece for their short story. Original drab paper boards gold cloth backstrip paper spine label lettered in black front cover with debossed brown title label and black vignette of rickshaw puller and rider top and bottom edges trimmed fore-edge untrimmed. Backstrip bright with light rubbing and wear small splits at ends of outer hinges binding firm tips worn boards and contents a little foxed. A very good copy. hardcover
