Robert Story 1795-1860 'The Craven poet' was the son of a Northumberland agricultural labourer and himself variously employed as schoolmaster and civil servant in the administration of Robert Peel perhaps after his 'The Isles are Awake' contained within this volume expressed poetic support for the Conservatives. This lavishly produced collection the final published in Story's lifetime is dedicated to the Duke of Northumberland. The list of subscribers is a testament to the author's popularity in his native county containing a preponderance of Northumberland residents notably textile manufacturer and politician Sir Titus Salt 1803-1876. . Decorative borders of blue and gilt. Engraved vignette of Alnwick Castle on title-page. Period binding of full red morocco with raised bands decoration in gilt and blind all edges gilt. The author known as the Craven Poet was of humble background and was considered in his lifetime as a successor to Burns. The Duke of Northumberland was largely responsible for financing this edition of his work which may account for the fairly lavish nature of the printing. The list of subscribers includes the names of a number of other aristocrats as well as of a preponderance of residents of the author's native northern England including Titus Salt.Presentation copy from the author inscribed on the second black: ''To John Beach Esq with the Author Robert Story's best wishes - 2 Nov. 1858''. On the first blank is a presentation inscription dated in the following year from John Beach to his niece Mary. John Beach's name doesn't feature in the list of subscribers. A later unconnected inscription appears on the verso of the front free endpaper.Rear cover slightly marked. Joints faintly rubbed. Very good indeed. Scarce.
