Not long after his arrival in the U.S., Lieber approached the firm of Carey Lea & Carey (of philadelphia) proposing a number of possible literary projects. Henry Carey agreed to sponsor an encyclopedia. It was a massive undertaking. Lieber modeled the work on Brockhaus' 'Conversations Lexikon' with appropriate portions adapted to its American audience. Publication of the original parts issue began in 1829. For this edition Lieber had the assistance of: Edward Wigglesworth (1804-1876); Thomas Gamaliel Bradford (1802-1887); Henry Vethake (1792-1866); and many others. Indeed, Lieber convinced many distinguished Americans to contribute appropriate sections to his enterprise. For example, Joseph Story, a famous federal judge and a founder of Harvard Law School, contributed over 120 pages on divers legal topics. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! BASEMENT
88 pages. Profusely illustrated in black and white. "As a Firm which has been engaged in manufacturing in Bristol for over 200 years, we felt that we should like to make some contribution towards the re-birth of our city. A vivid, yet simple account of the main features of the story of Bristol - particularly at this time when we have lost so many records of the past - seemed appropriate. In order to give a clear idea of Bristol's historical development, we have attempted to present a cross-section of the life of the city at selected periods - 1200, 1500, 1750 and 1939... We have shown the destruction caused by the 'blitz', and said something about the plans and opportunities for the future." - From the Foreward by J.S. Fry and Sons Ltd. Front free endpaper all but removed. Prior owner's name upon remaining portion, else book unmarked. Title page just beginning to loosen. Average to above average wear overall. Book
253 pages. "A book really telling our story would offer different things to different people. Indian women, who read it would say, 'Why, if they could do that - accomplish that - then we can too.' To white women and others, it would be an education: they would see what life on a reserve is like for women. They would see what all our protesting has been about." - Glenna Perley to Editor. Bit of high-lighting else unmarked and clean with very light wear. Attractive copy. Book
