Any defects are listed in the description.; This is a lot of 39 copies of The Bibelot: A Reprint of Poetry and Prose for Book Lovers and 1 bound Volume IX which is a 1-year run from 1903. Further described as "Chosen in Part from Scarce Editions and Sources Not Generally Known." The Bibelot was publisher Thomas Bird Mosher's little literary magazine published monthly for subscribers and brought the short works of notable authors to the US public. Most works if not all are taken from Mosher's own library and the 20-year span of publication represents what's essentially an anthology of that collection. Mosher wrote most of the Forwards to accompany the short works.The 39 softcovers:The authors include William Morris Francis Thompson Andrew Lang J. M. Synge Arthur Symons Sir Thomas Browne Algernon Charles Swinburne Aubrey Beardsley Oliver Eton William Butler Yeats Walt Whitman David Gray and many others. Volumes from 1900 1906 1907 1908 1909 1911 and 1914 are in this lot which has no continuous run for any of these years. There are a few duplicates.Published under the imprint Thomas B. Mosher these were job printed by Smith and Sale of Portland Maine are 6" x 5" string bound in soft blue wraps and typically between 30 and 40 pages printed on Van Gelder paper. There are no illustrations and a few advertisements are present usually for other literary publications. An occasional leaf is unopened.These were ephemeral 5-cent publications and not meant to last through the ages. All are intact but have light soil and discoloration to varying degrees with sunning and wear to the edges. Some have minor chipping an occasional penciled or stamped ownership name to the cover and are the antithesis of pristine. Generally Very Good to Very Good. All would be perfect impulse buy items near the counter of your open shop. The 1 hardbound volume:This is volume IX from 1903 and contains all 12 numbers. These are the wraps edition bound together in blue paper over boards with a vellum or parchment spine. Title Volume and Year are on a paper label laid down to the spine.The bound volume has edge and corner wear and faint discoloration to the paper over the boards. The spine is darkened as typical. This book is about Very Good condition.All would be good for online stock or for impulse buys near the front counter of your open shop. Marbled boards with later leather spine new endpapers. Stamp of the Isle of Wight Insitution on several pages. Title page frontispiece and some plates foxed as often found the remainder of the text quite clean. Map has a section meaauring about 1.5 x 3 inches missing from lower left with some loss of content. A good reference copy. The author was the son of Sir John Barrow who traveled and worked in China and South Africa and served in the British Admiralty where he was a great promoter of Arctic voyages of exploration and discovery. The younger man followed in his father's footsteps as a traveler and writer producing popular and well-received works on his travels in Ireland Iceland Northern Europe and Austria Lombardy and Bavaria. Wagner-Camp 410: "Samuel Bowles and his party left Atchison Kansas on May 21 1865 for San Francisco by way of Salt Lake and across central Nevada stopping at Austin and Virginia City. They reached the Pacific at the end of June and traveled overland up the the coast to British Columbia returning to San Francisco by steamer. They visited Yosemite in August." Curry & Kruska 19: "Pages 223 -37 comprise a description of Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Big Tre Grove. Bowles notes that there had been 300 visitors to the valley so far that season compared to 100 in 1864. Spined sunned but legible with slight fraying to cloth; corners rubbed light scattered foxing. Bremer 1801-1865 was a Swedish writer and champion of women's rights. Her domestic novels were very popular both at home and abroad and earned her the sobriquet "the Swedish Jane Austen." In 1849 Bremer visited the United States where she was welcomed in New England as a kindred spirit for her antislavery sentiments. There she met with Ralph Waldo Emerson Henry Wadsworth Longfellow James Russell Lowell and Nathaniel Hawthorne among others. She went on to visit Shaker and Quaker communities in the mid-Atlantic to view the conditions of slaves in the South and to tour Scandinavian communities in the Midwest. Sabin 7713 Howes B-745. Burgundy leather fine binding with 2 thick gilt frames and large diagonal gilt title on the front cover gilt frames on the back cover. gilt lines on the cover edges and tiny little gilt flowers on the inner turn-ins. 5 raised bands to the spine with gilt title in the second compartment and gilt flower motifs and corner pieces in the other compartments. All pages edged with thick bright gilt. On thick cream paper the texts are printed in a red border on each page with titles at the head of each page in large ornate font and vignettes and red initial capitals at the start of each chapter. Condition near fine front hinge repaired else fine contents very clean a very attractive book. I could not find another copy of this book for sale at this time nor much information about the author J.M.S. Brooke though there is this copy of a letter he wrote to the editor of The Times in 1888 "Sir -- Paying my daily visit to my church this afternoon I was surprised to find the caretaker in a semi-stupified state. Asking her what was the matter she told me that a man had just entered the church and finding her all alone inquired whether I was in the vestry. On receiving a reply in the negative he said "I see you are alone" and immediately took out a pocket-handkerchief and dashed it in her face. The strong smell of whatever liquid it had been steeped in dazed and stupefied her and she for a moment or two lost her consciousness. The noise of some of the workmen on the roof seemed to have alarmed this scoundrel and he bolted out of the church. This incident Sir perhaps might afford a clue. At any rate it will warn solitary women who are in charge of churches. I am Sir your obedient servant J. M. S. BROOKE. 1859005784Boston: Gould and Lincoln 1859. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Jeremiah Chaplin was a 19th century Reformed Baptist theologian who became the first president of Colby College in Maine in 1817. He returned to his pastorate in Rowley MA in 1833 continuing to preach and to write before a final move to Hamilton NY where he died in 1841. His seven published works were all issued posthumously "The Evening Of Life" being the first in 1851. It is a collection of prayers devotions and religious and philosphical excerpts from numerous authors directed primarily at an older audience. This copy is from the "Revised and Much Enlarged" edition issued by Gould & Lincoln in 1859 a first edition thus and noted as a new edition on the title page. There were also 3 earlier printings by Jewett & Co. Boston in 1854 and 1856. This copy is about 5 x 7 5/8 inches 281 pages plus 12 pages of publisher's ads bound in black paper-covered boards stamped with a geometric design and the Gould & Lincoln symbol. Lettering on spine is in gold. The boards are considerably worn at the edges corners and spine ends with chipping at top of spine cover revealing top edge of binding. The bottom edge of the spine cover is worn through but not yet lost. The boards' surfaces show shelf wear and rubbing. That said the binding itself remains firm with all hinges interior and exterior intact with no signs of cracking. A previous owner's name is neatly written on the fep in pencil. The text was probably exposed to damp conditions at some point but is now dry with a slight spine lean and very minimal foxing and staining. It is otherwise clean complete unmarked and easily read. This book is now very scarce in any of its 19th century editions usually found only in divinity schools and large university libraries. <br/> <br/> Gould and Lincoln hardcover

Printed from the edition that was corrected by Charles Dickens from 1867 to 1868 and were carefully reprinted for these volumes. All 34 volumes are bound in quarter leather the spines have 5 raised band with gold gilt detailing. All 34 volumes have slight wear along the edges but remain in good overall condition. . The pages of Volume 8 are lightly wavy but the pages remain accessible and the text is not affected. Volume 23 and 30 have a few pages with small closed tears the text is not affected. Volume 21 has pages that are a little torn. There are no ink inscriptions or annotations in any of the Volumes. the binding is lovely and strong.
