In 1893 the business outgrew its original location and moved to Richmond Indiana and became E.G. Hill Co. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering floral-patterned endpapers. Rubbing to extremeities one scuff mark on front board but still an attractive copy. The author recounts her experiences on an extended Raymong and Whitcomb tour which took her across the country from Boston to California and back again. Includes chapters on Pasadena Los Angeles Santa Barbara Riverside San Diego Sonoma County and Santa Cruz and two chapters on Yosemite. She visited Salt Lake City on the return trip. Flake 2398 describes the relevant section of her book thus: "A visit to Utah after 'polygamy was dead.' She attends a meeting at the Mormon tabernacle." "Despite Johnston's hunter-like attire and pose in the frontispiece this work is primarily one of travel. Palmer a doctor arrived in San Francisco in 1849 and spent worked for a year as the city physician. Cowan p. 471 says "his sketches are rather different from those of many of his fellow-sojourners." Occasional smudged pages; text otherwise unmarked. Reading served as a missionary to Gaboon and later as a commercial agent for the United States. He recounts his party's journey from Philadelphia which took them through Sierra Leone Liberia Ivory Coast and Gold Coast. Includes some discussion of the American Colonization Society's efforts in Liberia; slaveholding in Africa; commerce along the coast and rivers; prospects for a railroad and commercial development of the interior. Marbled boards with later leather spine new endpapers. Stamp of the Isle of Wight Insitution on several pages. Title page frontispiece and some plates foxed as often found the remainder of the text quite clean. Map has a section meanuring about 1.5 x 3 inches missing from lower left with some loss of content. A good reference copy. The author was the son of Sir John Barrow who traveled and worked in China and South Africa and served in the British Admiralty where he was a great promoter of Arctic voyages of exploration and discovery. The younger man followed in his father's footsteps as a traveler and writer producing popular and well-received works on his travels in Ireland Iceland Northern Europe and Austria Lombardy and Bavaria. Very mild spine slant rubbing to extremities; internals clean and sound. Lady Brassey was a skilled photographer and botanist and also had an interest in medicine. She and her husband a Member of Parliament and accomplished sailor traveled extensively on their yacht "Sunbeam" and Annie's lively books about their adventures found an eager audience. This book published after she died of malaria at age 48 recounts travels in India Sri Lanka Indonesia Malaysia and Australia. Longmans, Green hardcover books

A Scotsman visits the United States and finds the Americans somewhat lacking not least because of slavery. His critical but colorful account of his travels to the major East Coast cities Upper and Lower Canada and along the Ohio and Mississippi was a popular success and was translated in to French and German. Hubach p. 68 comments that Hamilton "had a good sense of humor but he echoed Mrs. Trollope's satirical tone and warned England against imitating American institutions although he admitted he might be guilty of English prejudice." Extensive visits were made in Rio Lima California the Gulf of California and Mexico. Woods was traveling in central Mexico when the Mexican War began and he escaped via Vera Cruz. Elizabeth Fox Tuckett 1837-1872 was the sister of the well-known English alpinist Francis Fox Tuckett 1834-1913 who regularly gathered a party of friends and family to accompany him on climbing expeditions. Elizabeth had a talent for drawing as well as a love of travel and produced four popular light-hearted books of which this was the first chronicling her adventures in the form of humorous sketches. Neate T66. Some creasing to cloth corners rubbed occasional foxing lacking rear free endpaper; overall about very good. Inscribed in light pencil on the front free endpaper "With heartfelt good wishes for the/New Year E.F. Tuckett iIllegible place name Dec. 30 1869." In addition Tuckett has written out the full names of the members of the expedition on the "Dramatis Personae" page where they are identified in print only by their initials. Rarely found signed. Original green cloth with illustration of the authors on the front board. Minor insect damage to front board spine slightly toned some foxing to endpapers else quite sound and clean. The American husband and wife team were wealthy zealous and energetic explorers who together made many expeditions to the Himalayas. Fanny a suffragist as well as a bit of a publicity hound made sure the world knew of her achievements as a pioneering female climber. Among other achievements she held the women's altitude record for 28 years after her conquest of 23000-ft Pinnacle Peak in 1906. Robinson Wayward Women amusingly describes her as having "practically battered the Karakorams into submission first treading them over with her squat hob-nailed figure and then pinning them down on virgin maps and charts to take home for the various Geographical Societies of England and America to fight over." This is the account of their first Himalayan expedition 1898-99 during which they reached the Karakoram Pass and explored the Biafo Glacier Neate W124. Cassell and Company hardcover books
