Sheet approximately 14x36cm printed one side only of an article originally printed in "The Seattle Daily Times" January 19 1904. very good Account of the frauds perpetrated by the agent of a British Syndicate hired to buy up mining claims in the Yukon. Mr. Torrance "a western man." bought worthless property that he salted was an extravagant spender and when the syndicate sent a mining engineer to inspect the properties he reported that all he found was "sawed wood." 17120No place Twickenham Film Studios . Signed 'Phipps. 15.6.39.'. 1p. small 4to. On leaf removed from autograph album. In very good condition lightly-aged. A charming energetic cartoon taking up the whole of the page. Depicts a haughty toff with a monocle looking down his nose at a Scottie dog while saying 'When I was a boy Sir . .' The dog in the bottom right-hand corner replies: 'When I was a Pup Sir . .' Signed at bottom left: 'Phipps. 15.6.39.' Educated at Lancing College and Oxford Phipps started with the Daily Mail straight from university in 1929. At one stage he drew fashion drawings and then a strip 'Judy' for the Evening Standard. He was Art Editor of the Daily Mirror from 1949 to 1953 and then rejoined Associated Newspapers as Art Editor. See also the four-page article on Phipps by Percy V. Folded for postage. Begins: ‘My dear Richards / Greetings! / I should like very much to meet Hornung - practically any day would suit me. I admire his book immensely not only for the excellence of its workmanship but the remarkable manner of the characterization. It struck me as being intensely sincere.’ He hopes that the Richards clan are well ‘all of you’: ‘We are molto moderato so to speak - My brother’s cruel death in S. Africa was a ghastly blow to my wife & me.’ He signs off ‘Adé / Yours / Robin H Legge’. 5 January or 1 May 1901. unknown
