Title and publication information from front wrapper. Text begins and ends inside wrappers and those pages are included in page count. Gift inscription at head of first page of text dated Dec. 25 1908. The story told in verse about 3 brothers--Frank Best Harry Good and Tommy Reckless--and how Santa and Frank teach Tommy "True penitence" for killing Frank's dog. McLoughlin issued this story at least three times with different illustrations. This edition has a copyright date on the front cover but the illustrator is not identified. In Good Condition: front cover has vertical creasing; edges rubbed; covers slightly soiled; corners of front cover creased; just starting to separate at tail of spine; lower page corners lightly creased; occasional light soiling in lower margins; otherwise pages are clean and illustrations are bright. Very good. - Octodecimo 18mo 6-6/8 inches high by 4-1/4 inches wide. Softcover laid into pictorial wrappers featuring a woodcut by Alexander Anderson. The corners of the covers are creased and there is a slit along the tail of the spine. The wrappers consist of 4-pages. The pamphlet itself consists of 8 numbered pages with the woodcut repeated on the first page and it is laid into the wrappers forming a total of 12 pages. There is a circular stain to the inner edges of the pages. Very good. <p>First edition. American Tract Society pamphlet number 183.<p>In the American tract magazine of November 1831 authorship is attributed to the Rev. Joseph S. Christmas. As to the date the American Tract Society was located at 144 Nassau Street between 1827 and 1832.<p>On the fourth page of the wrapper is printed a hymn by Isaac Watts "Imploring Mercy". New York: Published by the American Tract Society, and sold at their depository, no. 144 Nassau-Street, [1827-1832]. paperback

Many of the cuts within elaborate gilt frames each page printed within a gilt boarder large gilt initials and other decorations all throughout. 4to in the publisher's deluxe binding of bright red full morocco the boards with elaborate decorative panels in gilt the spine gilt decorated in similar panel design and with festive gilt lettering board edges beveled marbled endpapers a.e.g. x 202 pp. A very attractive copy generally the text is very clean and fresh with some occasional light spotting more to the prelims as would be expected the block solid the festive red binding sturdy with firm hinges the scarlet morocco spine panel a bit darker than the covers the giltwork still very vivid and bright a little minor rubbing to the edges and shoulders. A BEAUTIFUL COLLECTION OF CHRISTMAS POEMS AND LYRICS. Arranged by periods of English history it includes the religious hymns one would expect but also more lighthearted fair such as carols in praise of ale mistletoe and wassailing. Birket Foster steals the limelight here though his wonderful tinted engravings make this a holiday gem truly worth treasuring. David Bogue hardcover

Small 8vo publisher's original plum cloth the upper cover and spine gilt lettered and decorated. 263pp. A beautifully preserved copy the text is fresh and clean a little uniform mellowing to the plates but no spotting at all the binding firm and strong with hinges in fine order the cloth in nice shape and unfaded but with a little expected rubbing and mellowing the gilt on the spine dulled. In all a very good and attractive copy. THE AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK AND A VERY NICE COPY INDEED. Dodge would create an instant classic with HANS BRINKER. THE IRVINGTON STORIES were her first published works she would be the recognized leader in American juvenile literature for almost a third of the nineteenth century.<br> THE IRVINGTON STORIES were very successful and would lead to her later fame. The work is composed of eight short stories. The first of which "The Hermit of the Hills" is a Christmas tale. There is also a story of the Civil War and an Indian tale.<br> The earlier issues of IRVINGTON STORIES are very rare on the market. James O'Kane hardcover

Aytoun's Lays first published 1849 were modelled on the works of Macaulay and Scott ODNB. The Paton Edition is prized for its expressive illustrations which embrace a medieval-revival style to emphasize historic costume and create a sense of drama. <br /> <br /> The London-based bindery John Ramage and Company helped "restore the fine hand-craft of bookbinding in an era when that process was increasingly mechanized" Morgan Library. John Ramage 1836-1911 apprenticed with both English and French binders before buying his first binder business in Edinburgh 1860. He opened a London bindery three years later Gertz. 184676371London: Longman and Co. 1846. Narrow 4to. Unpaginated 60 pp. Complete re-cased sympathetically. Light cloth blocked in gilt blue and red to upper board and in blind to lower. All edges gilt. Marks heavier to lower board though also present with rubbing to edges of upper board and light wear to corners. Short closed tear to ffep and very minor splitting to the front endpapers. Foxing mostly around edges of leaves. Beautifully decorated pages hand coloured with 3 pages per month. The manuscript from which the illuminated calendar for 1846 is reproduced was probably produced in 1380 and has been selected here as it offers a beautiful example of a style of art very different from that of the "hours" of Ann of Brittany which formed the calendar for 1845. The work opens with a preface followed by a 4-page history of the House of Anjou with some remarks on their patronage of illuminators. Humphreys was a master of illumination in the Victorian age. 28cms tall 19.5 cms wide. . Very Good. Gilt Decorated Cloth. 1846. Longman and Co. 1846 hardcover

Octavo xxiv chiefly indices 456 146 Postal Directory for the Colony 62 advertisements pages plus advertisements printed on the endpapers. Purple cloth extensively lettered in gilt and decorated in blind on both sides; rear cover affected by moisture buckling the board a little and staining the cloth and causing it to lift and crease; spine sunned and a little inkstained with a neat repair to the head; a few other minor signs of age and use; notwithstanding overall in very good condition internally excellent. The twenty-fourth number of the 'Natal Almanac and Register'. Provenance: the ownership signature 'Searcy' is written in ink at the head of the title page. We recognise it to be the hand of Alfred Searcy 1854-1925 customs officer parliamentary official and author. In 1882 he 'went to the Northern Territory as sub-collector to direct new customs arrangements. In recognition of his varied and excellent work he was promoted in 1888 and also became a justice of the peace. Within the tiny white community he was one of a handful of public servants striving to establish orderly administration over a vast area. In the 1880s especially there seemed to be a rosy future for many developmental schemes and Searcy was always an enthusiastic optimist. In 1890 his wife and family returned to Adelaide for health reasons' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. P. Davis & Sons, Printers hardcover

Amongst the group all dressed in their Sunday best clothing is a European dressed in a dark suit with the words "Merry Christmas" above him.<br /> <br /> A wharenui big house is the communal meeting house of the Maori people of New Zealand. The houses are often elaborately carved inside and out with stylized images of the tribe's ancestors in the tribe's unique patterns. This meeting house was newly constructed with a large glass window next to the door.<br /> <br /> 6 x 4" laid down on card stock. The Christmas greeting captioned in white.
