CD Fine condition "The most festive and just plain Christmassy Revels in years... British folk singer David Jones [was] entirely charming. . . always show-stopping." The Boston Globe The Victorian Revels is always an audience favorite, displaying the Dickensian merriment from which so much of our modern Christmas originates. This cast recording from the Cambridge Revels features delightful British singer David Jones, storyteller-singer Maggi Peirce, and Ken Burns' favorite pianist, Jacqueline Schwab. The 23 selections range from beloved carols to impish children's street songs, quaint parlour music to lively music hall favorites. Included are "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Silent Night," "Little Jack Horner," "Hail to Britannia," "The Twelve Days of Christmas," and "Mrs. Hoolihan's Christmas Cake."
CD Fine condition Revels’ newest recording, a superb collection of choral and instrumental music from England and Scotland, is called “Rose & Thistle.” The best music from the 2001 and 2003 Christmas Revels shows in Sanders Theatre, Cambridge, Massachusetts, can be heard here, including three live tracks from actual performances. This CD features the radiant voice of soprano Jayne Tankersley and the robust sound of baritone David Coffin, along with a spirited Revels chorus, first-rate English Renaissance and Scottish Baroque instrumental ensembles playing exquisite airs and lively dances, and a high-energy children’s chorus singing infectious traditional songs. The Cambridge Symphonic Brass Ensemble lends its rich support to the chorus, and a band of Scottish Highland pipers rounds out the recording. From the clashing swords in “The Buffens” to the haunting solo fiddle of “Da Day Dawis” to the descant soaring over the chorus and brass in “Rorate Coeli Desuper,” this collection is an essential addition to the library of any fan of great music of all kinds, and a great gift for anyone.
Running time 44:10 CD Fine condition This is the show that started it all: the original medieval Christmas Revels from which all their years of merry, musical mischief first began. A jovial king prepares his castle to make merry through dark midwinter, inviting his entire kingdom, from highest lord to humblest villager, to join the fun. All the Revels standards are here, including "Gower Wassail," "Abbots Bromley Horn Dance," "St. George and the Dragon," "The Boar's Head Carol," "Sussex Mummer's Carol," Susan Cooper's poem "The Shortest Day" (read by public radio star Robert J. Lurtsema), and of course, "Lord of the Dance," marvelously sung by Revels founder John Langstaff.
