At the time this work was published the Colony had only been recognised as a British dependency for ten years, and its natural advantages, such as the harbour of D'Urban being safer than that of Table Bay, led the author to be optimistic about its future. The "early settlers came on the scene about three years after the total devastation of the country by the Zulu king, Chaka..... The settlement of the Dutch in the colony, and the eventual occupation of it by the British are carefully gone into,..... A good description is given of the gradual establishment of civil government, and of the progress of the Colony, with notes on the towns, villages, and other settlements, and the Kaffir War,....".?Mendelssohn. Norah Lofts remarkable novel retells the story of the Nativity from the Annunciation to the Birth of Christ, and in it she has sought to reveal the motives and emotions of the characters as they converged on the humble stable in Bethlehem. With immense care and a superb sense of history she has re-created this most wonderful of tales with compassion, understanding, freshness and faith. .It opens in Nazareth where Mary, who has been visited by the Angel Gabriel, prepared for her forthcoming marriage to Joseph and shows with astonishing clarity the fears and joys she felt as she learned of her appointed task. np. Title page and text ruled in red throughout. 24mo. Original full decorated paper binding. Cover paper label. Designed and printed by Kurt H. Volk. Signed by Kurt H. Volk. Number 12 of a very Limited Edition. Lovely little copy. Kurt Hans Volk (1884-1962) was born in Germany, and probably trained as a printer/typographer there. He worked for many years at N.W. Ayers in Philadelphia before starting his own typographic firm in 1927. He widely lectured on advertising typography and authored the important work: "Using Type Correctly." He greatest influence as a designer was probably as a consultant to the Merganthaler Linotype Company. Today he is probably best known for a private series of keepsakes and limited edition books distributed to friends at Christmas. We are pleased to be able to offer one of these here. Fine books from earlier Christmas seasons make great gifts today. CHRISTMAS/W69x2
