Diderot one of the widest ranging and most creative minds of the Enlightenment is best known as the motive force behind and author of many articles in his 28-volume Encyclopédie 1764-1772 which occupied him for more than twenty years but he published works on a wide range of subjects before and after the Encyclopédie. The present 15 volumes published from Diderot's manuscripts including correspondence and totalling about 7500 pages therefore covers plays novels and poetry as well as essays on philosophy mathematics including music literature art and religion and includes correspondence with numerous men and women including Voltaire. Although his Encyclopédie articles are not included many were based on or carried further in publications included here and 220 pages of vol. III are devoted to the Encyclopédia. Diderot's Encyclopédie though enormously influential left him in financial straits. The French government banned it and the French establishment shunned him as a radical but from 1773 to his death he worked under the patronage of Catharine the Great of Russia who bought his library and paid him to oversee it in Paris giving him the freedom to pursue his literary and scholarly interests. In very good condition with only some minor foxing an occasional quire very slightly browned and an occasional minor marginal defect. With three engraved vignettes in the text and 34 plates by Bernard Naudin two of them double-page. AN IMMACULATE COPY.

Virtually unchanged since the day it left the bindery this is a beautiful luxury edition of Diderot's vicious satire skewering the hedonism cynicism and materialism of opponents of the Enlightenment. The work takes the form of a dialogue between "Moi" the narrator standing in for Diderot and "Lui" the jaded sophisticated "Nephew of Rameau" of the title. The operas of French composer Jean-Philippe Rameau 1683-1764 are among the topics Moi and Lui debate--the alleged superiority of Italian opera being one of the "culture wars" of the day--along with the worship of money and the possibility of morality without God. Fearing repercussions from political and cultural elites mentioned by name in the work Diderot never published it. The manuscript was in the library he sold to Catherine the Great of Russia and a copy found its way via Schiller into the hands of Goethe who translated it into German and published it in 1805. In 1890 French librarian George Monval found a copy of the manuscript in Diderot's own hand and the original text finally came into print. Our edition uses this text enlivened by the etchings of Bernard Naudin 1876-1946 whose genius for satirical caricature is well matched to the subject. Born into the trade as the son of a gilder in the Marius Michel workshop Emile Maylander 1866-1959 was still a child when he began to train with the best doreur of the day Gustave Bénard. By the age of 10! he was working for the atelier of Domont where he perfected his craft. He later worked for the great Cuzin and for Émile Mercier in whose workshop he was the premier doreur. After Mercier's death in 1910 he began doing high-end gilding work for other binders before opening his own studio in 1920. Flety tells us he quickly established a grand reputation among collectors. According to Duncan and De Bartha Maylander preferred bindings that used classical designs "which he executed with a faultless technique drawing the admiration of a number of bibliophiles." He chose such a classical design appropriate to the late 18th century for this work creating a harmony of text illustration and binding. Auguste Blaizot unknown

179652668Paris Buisson 1796/97 - An Cinquième De La République. 8vo. Very nice contemporary half calf with gilt spine. Minor barely noticeable repair to upper capital and slight bumping to corners. A very nice and clean copy with only very minor brownspotting. Printed on good paper. With the half-title bearing the "Décret concernant les Contrefacteurs" on verso. Book plate of Guy de Portuales to inside of front board. 4 411 1 pp.

The very rare first edition of Diderot's famous novel "The Nun" which was actually begun as an elaborate practical joke but which ended up as one of the most famous novels of the period. A great succes-de-scandale "The Nun" has both fascinated and unsettled the vast reading public since its first appearance. It started out as a series of letters from a fictitious character the nun Suzanne to one of Diderot's friends the Marquis de Crosmare who Diderot was trying to lure back to Paris describing her intolerable life in the convent and imploring him to help regain her freedom and her renounce her vows. The fictitious letters were later revised and written in to the novel that we know today. The work was completed in ab. 1780 and was published posthumously in 1796/97 attracting enormous attention and bringing to light a number of issues that had not previously been publically addressed. It focuses on the then-current practice of forcing young women into convents in order to get them out of the way on the unnatural life of the convents and on the corruption in religious institutions and among the clergy. As such it caused an outrage when it appeared and and became an instant succes-de-scandale. "A novel mingling mysticism madness sadistic cruelty and nascent sexuality it gives a scathing insight into the effects of forced vocations and the unnatural life of the convent. A succes de scandale at the end of the eighteenth century it has attracted and unsettled readers ever since. For Diderot's novel is not simply a story of a young girl with a bad habit; it is also a powerfully emblematic fable about oppression and intolerance. This new translation includes Diderot's all-important prefatory material which he placed disconcertingly at the end of the novel and which turns what otherwise seems like an exercise in realism into what is now regarded as a masterpiece of proto-modernist fiction." 119431Londres mais probablement Paris 1793. 12mo. 99 pages. Half-calf with corners smooth decorated spine binding of the time. First Edition of this text from "Jacques le Fataliste" Diderot's masterpiece of which it is the first appearance although fragmentary in book form. The story of the publication of "Jacques le Fataliste" is particularly complex. A first partial version of the novel was first inserted in about fifteen issues of Grimm's very confidential manuscript "Correspondance Littéraire" from 1778 to 1780. It was there that Schiller had spotted the present text which he translated into German and published in 1785 in the first issue of his journal "La Thalie Rhénane". This German translation served as the basis for the French version developed by the French writer and freethinker Jean-Paul Doray de Longrais 1736-1800 who had the work printed clandestinely during the Reign of Terror at the probably false address in London. It was not until three years later in 1796 that "Jacques le Fataliste" was finally printed for the first time in extenso in a largely incomplete version. "It is even thanks to this fragment retranslated into French and published in London in 1793 by a certain Doray de Longrais a cavalry officer and man of letters in his spare time that the French public knows in advance Jacques the fatalist at least through this detached piece translated from Yannick Séité's preface to the reprint given in 2014 by Éditions des Équateurs. This tale depicted the meticulously prepared revenge of an aristocrat who abandoned by her lover develops a Machiavellian plan to throw him into the arms of a young prostitute whom she passes off as a model of virtue. The unexpected epilogue reveals Diderot's propensity to elaborate a moral model detached from the social conventions of his time. The work had a considerable influence and it was adapted for the cinema twice. "It has been adapted for the screen several times such as the silent 1922 production 'Die Intriguen de Madame de la Pommeraye' directed by Fritz Wendhausen and in 1945 as 'Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne' directed by Robert Bresson and written by Bresson and Cocteau" Block. "Ce succès d'un épisode autonome de Jacques le Fataliste qui inspirera également Sacher-Masoch Sternheim et au cinéma Robert Bresson Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne 1945 est paradoxalement fidèle à la construction rhapsodique d'un roman égrenant et émiettant les récits et réflexions qu'échangent les deux protagonistes au long d'un voyage sans départ ni arrivée" Encyclopaedia Universalis. This first edition is extremely rare. We have only been able to locate five copies in public collections around the world National Libraries of France Poland and Austria Rouen Library and Cologne Library. No copies are listed in the United States. Some traces of wear on the binding. Good copy. This copy has been bound as a single volume following the 1772 edition of Diderots Works in 6 volumes Volume VI II.A good copy. The introductory text à la mémoire de Diderot is by Jakob-Heinrich Meister a friend of Necker and successor to Frédéric Melchior Grimm at the Correspondance littéraire. The novel conceived from 1765 onwards was first issued in instalments in this journal between 1778 and 1780. The published version however is not definitive as Diderot continued to expand it until his death: the work which comprised 125 pages in 1771 reached 200 pages in 1778 208 in 1780 and 287 in 1783. Yet the work was already known in Germany prior to its French publication thanks to Schillers translation published in 1787 in his journal Thalia. Following this version Doray de Longrais produced a French version of the same narrative. In 1792 Germany discovered the complete text through a new translation by Mylius. Finally in 1796 the original text was published in France based on a copy likely supplied by Grimm or Goethe. An unclassifiable work breaking free from all the conventions of the novel it draws on the picaresque tradition and inherits the freedom of a book that deeply influenced Diderot: Vie et opinions de Tristram Shandy by Sterne.
