A beautiful collection of the engraved plates from the 'Antiquities' and 'Design' sections of the noted eighteenth-century French reference work 'Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire Raisonné des Sciences des Arts et des Métiers'. The 'Encyclopédie' was originally published in Paris between 1751 and 1772 and was well-known for promoting the ideas of the Enlightenment. Contributors to this exhaustive reference work included Voltaire history literature philosophy Jean-Jacques Rousseau music political theory Jean-Baptiste de La Chapelle mathematics and more. The supplemental volumes with the plates first appeared beginning in 1762. Edited by Denis Diderot Jean Le Rond d'Alembert and Andre le Breton. Included here are eleven engraved plates from the Antiquities section and thirty-six engraved plates from the Design section as well as the original descriptions of the plates. There are 4 pages of the original publication reduced and reprinted on each page of this volume along with many many illustrations. The only defect is a little bit messed up at the top of the backstrip; the book is otherwise unmarked and in fantastic condition. The text is in French. The book is big 15.5" tall by 10" wide by 2" thick and nearly 10 pounds in weight.
