1879WRCLIT64148London: Macmillan and Co. 1879. Two volumes. Original forest green pebbled cloth ruled in black lettered in gilt edges untrimmed. Short clean snag at top of spine of the first volume inner hinges cracked cords holding as usual for this book covers a little worn otherwise a good set. Bookplates of William Joseph Connery and of Frederick Burgess and with an old bookseller's description tipped- into volume one and a small label reading "First edition" affixed in both volumes. In a half morocco slipcase. First edition. With an 1863 check signed by Mathews on a preliminary leaf in volume one. The author/editor of these volumes the eldest son and namesake of the novelist inherited the editorship of ALL THE YEAR ROUND and was later a reader at Macmillan. Charles Mathews 1776-1835 was a popular English actor. Dickens Sr. in his younger days had been a devoted admirer of Mathews and sat in the pit whenever the actor played. In 1832 the future novelist applied to George Bartley the stage manager for Mathews for work in the theatre and an appointment was arranged for an audition. On the day of the appointment however Dickens was laid-up with a terrible cold and was unable to appear. Dickens wrote to say he would have to resume his application "next season" but -- as literary opportunities came his way -- the application was never renewed. Macmillan and Co. hardcover books

1876125031876. Comprising No Thoroughfare and The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices. Boston: William F. Gill & Company 1876. Original green cloth stamped in gilt. First Edition thus so combined into one volume. These were both collaborations between Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins brother of Dickens's daughter's husband -- "The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices" had appeared in Dickens's periodical Household Words in 1857 while "No Thoroughfare" had been the final 1867 Extra Christmas Number of Dickens's subsequent periodical All The Year Round. Each tale has its own Gill title page and each has a frontispiece illustration but the two stories are continuously paginated. Very good-plus condition minor wear at the extremities front endpaper cracking at the hinge. Podeschi Yale D75. Single sheet of light grey stationery folded once vertically to form 4 pages 24 lines ~ 85 words. 7-1/8" x 4-3/8" <br/><br/>D'Oyly writes Harley who was fairly close to Dickens at the time & for whom Dickens wrote The Strange Gentleman asking for an introduction to the rising star of the British literary world. "if you would be so kind as to give me a letter of introduction to Mr. Charles Dickens Boz that is to say provided you can so so without impropriety inserted above trouble for I have long wished to know him both from reading his inimitable works & also what I have heard of him personally." Evidently Harley did so for Dickens writes Harley on 6 April "Thank you very for consulting me in the matter of our friend's note. unidentified by Pilgrim letters editors He must be a rum customer I take it for he had written me before forwarding a book of Poems of his writing: the which I graciously acknowledged. Therefore I should thought he needed no other Introduction. Whatever you desire to do in the matter - do - and be assured it will please me." Pilgrim Letters v. 3 p. 468. Apparently the two did not meet at least in the early 1840s for according to Dickens' Letters 1840 - 1846 there is no correspondence with D'Oyly. unknown books
