1842602107Boston: Henry Prentiss 1842. Softcover. Very Good. Unknown edition. Folio. Single bifolium making four pages. Separating along the bottom of the fold notched and worn along the fold from once being bound within an album light offsetting throughout and light edgewear still very good. An instrumental piece for piano. Plate number 223. Above the music is printed "As performed in the Melo Drama of the Nalade Queen." The front cover states "The friend and benefactor of poor 'Oliver' 'Nicholas' and sweet little 'Nelly'" underneath a portrait of Dickens. This is the same portrait shown on the cover of the 1842 publication of "The Stars Their Early Vigils Keep" which was sung at the complimentary dinner held for Charles Dickens in Boston on February 1st 1842 upon his first visit to the United States; this being the same visit referenced in the title "'Boz' in Boston" Boz of course being Dicken's childhood nickname for his little brother which he adopted as his pen name. Rear wrapper detached along the upper half of the spine notched and worn along the spine from once being bound within an album music shop stamp on the front cover and light foxing and offsetting throughout still a complete and good or better copy. For voice and piano. The front wrapper features a black and white illustration of Walter and Florence from Dickens' Dombey and Son along with an edited passage from the book. Little Dorrit was originally published in serial form between 1855 and 1857 The story features Amy Dorrit youngest child of her family born and raised in the Marshalsea prison for debtors in London Arthur Clennam encounters her after returning home from a 20-year absence ready to begin his life anew<br /> It satirizes shortcomings of both government and society including the institution of debtors' prisons where debtors were imprisoned unable to work and yet incarcerated until they had repaid their debts The prison in this case is the Marshalsea where Dickens's own father had been imprisoned He is also critical of the impotent bureaucracy of the British government in the form of the fictional "Circumlocution Office" Dickens also satirizes the stratification of society that results from the British class system. <br /> <br /> This copy has all the points of the first issue of the first edition i.e.<br /> 3‑line errata on p. xiv<br /> "William" for "Frederick" p. 317 l. 27<br /> Signature "B2" instead of "BB2" p. 371<br /> "Rigaud" for "Blandois" pp. 469-473<br /> Lacking errata on p. 467<br /> <br /> It is good attractively bound in 1/2 leather on marbled paper-cover boards with matching marbled endpapers. Hubbed leather spine is heavily ornamented in gilt design and bears five raised bands as well as a green label stamped in gilt lettering. All edges marbled. Endpapers are also marbled matching the pattern on the cover and edges. Frontispiece in black and white is from a painting by George Cattermole. Textblock is printed in duel columns. Text is small print. vii 344 pp.<br><br>CONDITION: In overall good condition this rebound copy bears some rubbing and light wear on the cover and spine. Both outer and inner hinges are strong and binding is sound. Even as there is some foxing throughout particularly within endpapers leaves have evenly toned and are free from any marginalia annotation or creasing. Front pastedown bears ex-libre bookplate of previous owner Sir Gilbert Frankland Lewis believed to be the 3rd Baronet 1808–1883 and clergyman from The Lewis Baronetcy of Harpton Court in the County of Radnor of the United Kingdom. Per Wikipedia "A baronet or the rare female equivalent a baronetess is the holder of a baronetcy a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century however in its current usage was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown." Light scuffing and wear to the extremities scuffing to joints and a small superficial crack at the head of the spine with the suggestion of a repair strong and solid a handsome deluxe binding; all edges gilt; internally clean and fresh marbled endpapers. A very good copy with a little scuffing and wear to the binding.<br /> <br /> Originally published in Household Words in 1850 and included in a published collection in 1858 but with no separate edition until this one in 1871 and oddly no accompanying UK edition until 1899. More normally seen in bevelled cloth this has all the hallmarks of a publisher's gift binding. A beautifully produced little book. Fields, Osgood, & Co unknown
