Small 8vo 7 11/16" x 5 3/4" / 13 x 10 cm; wrappers with engraving by Cruikshank on cover red binder's tape as spine; 11 copper-engraved plates by George Cruikshank frontispiece plate is of the music manuscript; "History of the Loving Ballad of Lord Bateman from the Life of George Cruikshank by Blanchard Jerrold 1882; viii9-40 or 48 numbered pages. Supposedly soon after hearing and being delighted by this popular and anonymous ditty the great caricaturist George Cruikshank "performed" it for his close friend Charles Dickens. The latter was equally bemused by the ballad and encouraged his associate to illustrate it and thus it was published with charming copper-plate illustrations. Rare First Scottish edition with correction of "wine" to "vine" in the fifth stanza. Ad for T.H-Smith's Essence of Coffee with Chicory on back wrapper. Pages viii9-40 paged on outer corners throughout; yellow-green vertically fine-ribbed cloth over flexible boards cut flush blocked and lettered gilt lettered yellow-green-through-gilt on front board; end-papers coated pale yellow. Insignificant faded patch to covers not affecting design; front free end-paper lacking; otherwise a nice copy. Includes a six-line P.S. by Cruikshank followed by his wood-engraved signature declaring that he did not in fact write the introductory 'Warning to the Public' which appears over his printed signature above. The original verse - or at least the idea of it - is almost certainly by Thackeray a scrap-book being known containing a piece called "The Famous History of Lord Bateman" partly in his hand and with illustrations by him whilst the 'Warning' and the ten pages of notes are on the authority of J.F. Dexter quoting statements made to him on three separate occasions by Cruikshank the work of Dickens. This is corroborated by the text of a letter from Dickens to Cruikshank. It is likely that Thackeray wrote the text while Dickens prepared the notes and Preface. Compare Yale/Gimbel B84. The first London edition was published by Charles Tilt in 1839. Internally somewhat age-toned but without foxing. Plates are in VG or better condition. This copy has been secured years ago by red binder's tape for its spine which has caused slight bleed through along the inner margins of the covers. The latter also suffers from water-staining outside the engraving by Cruikshank and chaffing of the extremities especially the lower right corner which has abraided. Notwithstanding the slight external red stain the contents are clear bright and the binding is holding well. David Bryce & Son unknown

Bindery's imprint "Chapman & Hall 186 Strand" at top of front endpaper. Solid text block light wear to corners and hinges. Faint toning to endpapers a near fine copy. Includes a bookplate belonging to Charles Dickens affixed to front endpaper with a lion facing left. Another bookplate from the estate sale of Charles Dickens with the notation: "Gadshill Place June 1870." Gad's Hill Place in Higham Kent was Dickens' home from 1857 until his passing on June 9 1870. The contents of the library at Gad's Hill were hand-written by Carles Dickens Jr. who inherited the library upon his father's passing. This copy is found in the Dickens Jr. catalogue Henry Sotheran's catalogue c. 1871 and the Stonehouse catalogue 1878 1935.<br /> In addition to writing and painting Chauncy Hare Townshend 1798-1868 studied mesmerism throughout the 1830s. He succeeded Dr. John Elliotson as the chief British exponent of mesmerism. Elliotson introduced Townshend to Charles Dickens and the pair bonded over their mutual interests in hypnotic arts and writing. They remained lifelong friends. Townshend's 1859 poetry book The Three Gates was dedicated to Dickens and in return Dickens dedicated Great Expectations 1861 to Townshend. That discussion in both directions is well parsed elsewhere. Of interest here is the half page notation by noted Dickens collector JF Dexter "Mr. George Cruikshank told me on three different occasions that the preface and notes to this volume were written by Charles Dickens. /s/ John F. Dexter. 13th April 1878".<br /> This elegant little volume presents a strong position on the debate. A near fine copy of this fragile pamphlet with very occasional spotting and a short split in the hinge of the front wrapper.<br /> <br /> § First edition of a pamphlet written by Dickens under the pseudonym of Timothy Sparks defending the rights of the working class to a free Sabbath in opposition to a proposed law which would have banned recreation on Sundays. The pamphlet was never reprinted in Dickens' lifetime. Two facsimile editions appeared in 1884; the first edition is distinguished by the words "Sunday Under Three Heads" beginning page 35 and the spelling "hair" rather than "air" on page 7 line 15. Owing to the abruptness of the hill behind the town there is a street along the edge of a bluff from which you can look directly down upon all that part of the city which lies low near the level of the rivers. On the evening of this dark day we were conducted to the edge of the abyss and looked over the iron railing upon the most striking spectacle we ever beheld. The entire space lying between the hills was filled with blackest smoke from out of which the hidden chimneys sent forth tongues of flame while from the depths of the abyss came up the noise of hundreds of steam-hammers. There would be moments when no flames were visible; but soon the wind would force the smoky curtains aside and the whole black expanse would be dimly lighted with dull wreaths of fire. It is an unprofitable business view-hunting; but if any one would enjoy a spectacle as striking as Niagara he may do so by simply walking up a long hill to Cliff Street in Pittsburg and looking over into—hell with the lid taken off. Such is the kind of day of which Pittsburg boasts. The first feeling of the stranger is one of compassion for the people who are compelled to live in such an atmosphere. When hard pressed a son of Pittsburg will not deny that the smoke has its inconveniences. He admits that it does prevent some inconsiderate people from living there who but for the prejudice against smoke in which they have been educated would become residents of the place.
