Eighteenth-century speckled calf edges speckled red and green spine gilt in compartments and lettered directly in gilt board-edges roll-tooled in gilt; Villette's woodcut monogram device to title woodcut and typographic headpieces; upper hinge cracked small abrasions and short splits to joints subtly restored sporadic light foxing slight dust-soiling at foot of last 2 ff.; cancelled 1773 ownership inscription 'de la bibliotheque de Philippe-Rene Prevel' to front free endpaper late eighteenth-century ownership inscriptions 'Ex libris Brelay' to title and p. 220 Brelay's printed ownership slip pasted to title see below; a very good copy.Extremely rare reissue reusing the sheets of the first edition of 1688 - printed by Francoise Loir widow of the printer Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy - of the poems of Antoinette Deshoulieres c. 1634-1694 published to coincide with the reading of Deshoulieres's work at the Academie francaise in the spring of 1691 our copy owned by a resident of Niort during the French Revolution.Voltaire called Deshoulieres the most successful of French female poets as 'her verses have been the most widely remembered' quoted in Nouvelle biographie universelle XIII col. 828 trans. She was named a member of the Paduan Accademia degli Ricovrati and of the Academy of Aries and in 1688 she received a pension of 2000 livres from Louis XIV. Although she was unable to join the Academie francaise due to her sex her poems were recited as part of the official proceedings for the election of Bernard de Fontenelle in 1691. Our copy with a cancel title although retaining Loir's 1687 privilege du roi was evidently issued by Villette to capitalise on this event. Villette bought much of Cramoisy's unsold stock from Loir in 1691 and would eventually publish his own 'second edition' in 1693 after the publication rights had been ceded to him. Pasted to the title-page is a Revolutionary-era printed ownership slip '661 au citoyen Brelay rue de la Liberte a Niort. Deux-Sevres' the egalitarian designation citoyen was popularised following the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen and was used as a universal form of address during the Revolution.OCLC finds only two copies in the US Cornell Minneapolis and none in the UK; not in Library Hub. A delightful and very scarce anthology of poetry consisting of the winners of the French Academy poetry prize from the mid seventeenth to mid eighteenth century. In the original French.The very scarce first edition of this collection of poetry. Presenting the winners of the poetry prize of L'Academie Francoise between 1671 and 1748 published on behalf of the Academy.As the prize was not held every single year between these dates presented here are forty-two examples of French poetry between these years. Established in 1635 the purpose of the Academy was to maintain standards of literary taste and to establish the literary language of France.The contents detail either the subject or title of each winner and their name beginning with 'Le Duel Aboli' by Bernard de La Monnoye in 1671 La Monnoye won the prize four further times in his lifetime and concluding with Jean-Francois Marmontel's poem on the glory of Louis XIV in 1746.Other winners include Antoine Houdar de la Motte Antoinette Deshoulieres Nicolas-Michel Linant and Catherine Bernard. The latter two won the prize a number of times each.A fascinating and very scarce work that provides insight into the most celebrated French poetry of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. In a full calf binding with gilt detailing to back strip. Minor loss of leather to back strip tail. Rubbing resulting in loss of leather to front and rear joints and board perimeters. Front and rear joints starting with boards holding firm. Front free endpaper absent. Internally firmly bound. Pages clean and bright with the odd area of light spotting. Of all the 17th- and 18th-century books "on military technology no works had greater influence or enjoyed greater prestige than those of Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban the great military engineer of the reign of Louis XIV" Guerlac. Although a highly practical man and not a theoretician Vauban had written down the secrets of his success in the building and capturing of fortresses between 1669 and 1704. Vauban's strategic superiority could only remain if this information was kept secret so his texts circulated only within a very select circle. After Vauban's death they were leaked. "By the time the treatises became available Vauban's early readers must have been ready to believe that the text finally being made public did in fact contain incredible military secrets and have the power to make nations invincible. No other treatise of siegecraft had been surrounded by such secrecy" DeJean. The first volume contained Vauban's treatise on the attack of fortified places but the added part on defence was actually written by a colleague seigneur Deshoulières 1621-1693. A second volume published in 1742 contained Vauban's treatise on military mining and a general treatise on war.With library stamps. Binding slightly worn.
