Hall III p. 385 2. <br /> <br /> Raucourt a popular and controversial French actress made her debut at the Comédie Française in 1772 as Dido going on to play all the classical tragédienne roles. "Her beauty and talent had made her famous but her not so secret love affairs with other women made her notorious. . Raucourt led the Sect of Anadrynes a society of lesbians in Paris. . At the outbreak of the Revolution she was imprisoned for six months with other royalist members of the Comédie Française and she did not reappear upon that stage until the close of 1793 and then only for a short time. She deserted with a dozen of the best actors in the company to found a rival colony but a summons from the Directory brought her back in 1797. . Her funeral was the occasion of a riot. The clergy of her parish having refused to receive the body the crowd broke in the church doors and were only restrained from further violence by the arrival of an almoner sent posthaste by Louis XVIII." Large double atlas folio dual-sided broadside printed on newsprint sized 9.25 x 42 in. photo & woodcut engraving illustrations recto & verso toning to paper some chipping & edgewear paper repairs to closed tears still a G- copy. First edition thus of this advertising broadside for Erickson’s “J.W. Johnson’s Old Reliable Virginia Minstrels World’s best colored show. . . “ which touts their supposed 15 year history and appear to have either been reformed from the “Alabama Minstrels†show which played throughout the West and Midwest from 1905-1914 or simply taken over some of their acts. The contortionist fire king Hi Henry Hunt who appears in this broadside regularly performed with the “Alabama Minstrels†from 1905-1913. The silver voiced tenor A.J. McFarland and Grace Arniot Royal Entertainer depicted on the broadside also appear to have been African-American rather than black face performers. The name appears to have been drawn from the 19th-Century original “Virginia Minstrels†or the “Melodious Ethiopian Band†which featured Billy Whitlokc Dick Pelham Frank Brower and Dan Emmett performing in New York’s Bowery Amphitheater in 1843 and launched the minstrelsy form of entertainment. Emmett is perhaps best remembered as the author of “Dixie†which ironically would become the Confederate States unofficial anthem. 1781AQ31604Leeds: s.n. 1781. Single leaf broadside. Browned and creased some marginal chipping/tearing. An apparently unrecorded playbill advertising a benefit night of John Philip Kemble 1757-1823 at the provincial Theatre in Leeds in 1781. This appearance pre-dates Kemble's London debut by two years. At this time he was touring as a member of Tate Wilkinson's Company on the Yorkshire circuit; indeed it was Wilkinson who had constructed the Leeds theatre in 1771. Kemble son of actor-manager of a strolling theatrical troupe Roger Kemble and younger brother of actress Sarah Siddons took to acting in 1776 joining Wilkinson in 1778. Later in 1781 he moved to the Smock Alley theatre in Dublin before joining his sister at Drury Lane in September 1783. At Leeds he played the titular role in the tragedy of The Earl of Essex after which 'Shakespeare's Ode' was performed in which the majority of the players took vocal parts but with Kemble himself taking the speaking role. The evening concluded with the 'New Pantomime Entertainment' of Necromancer: of Harlequin Doctor Faustus an imaginative retelling of Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus by pantomimist and theatre manager John Rich 1692-1761 first performed in 1723. . 1794373435Boston: Printed for John West 1794. 62pp. 12mo. Disbound. Foxing a few edge tears to title staining to final few leaves small hole with minor loss to final leaf. 62pp. 12mo. Theater had been banned in Boston since the times of Increase Mather at the end of the 17th century. But in 1792 a group of Bostonians petitioned the legislature to repeal the Puritanical laws prohibiting theatrical performances and illegally established a theater in Board Alley. When Governor John Hancock sent his sheriff to shut down a performance a riot ensued. The following year an even bigger theater designed by an American architect and supported by John Quincy Adams and other notables was built at the corner of Federal and Franklin Streets. Known as the Federal Street Theatre or Boston Theatre the building opened at the beginning of February 1794 with a performance of Henry Brooke's Gustavus Vasa.<br /> <br /> Widespread publication of the plays did occur until after the Revolution when a rising middle and upper class demanded the cultural improvement of the young nation. "The market in America for published plays was determined by the theatre. It was the playgoer who bought plays and he bought the text of the play he had just seen or the one he was about to see performed on the stage. The absence of sustained theatrical activity-in fact the failure of the theatre to establish itself-in the English colonies during the first half of the eighteenth century suggests why no editions of plays were published in America during that time" Stoddard.<br /> <br /> In December 1793 with the opening of the Federal Street Theatre imminent Boston publishers David and John West proposed the publication of a selection of plays. "West proposed 'to obtain from the manager of the new theatre such plays of merit as will be performed in Boston the ensuing winter and it will be his aim to have them ready for delivery as near the time of performance as possible . They shall be printed weekly . The price to subscribers stitched in blue paper will be twenty cents each play' . West's ambition exceeded his capabilities but between January 4 and April 30 1794 he published thirteen numbers i.e. plays'" Stoddard. This of course included the first play at the Boston Theatre: Gustavus Vasa.<br /> <br /> The work was issued separately although also published within West's nonce volume A Selection of the Most Esteemed Plays Performed at the Theatre in Boston.
