Souvenir program from the premiere screening of Guitry's epic film the first such dramatic film about Napoléon since Abel Gance's 1927 silent classic. Guitry himself acted the part of Talleyrand in case star-studded cast that included Daniel Gelin and Raymond Pellegrin sharing the title role young and old and included Michèle Morgan Jean Marais O.W. Fischer Yves Montand Eric von Stroheim and Orson Welles. The gala permiere was held on March 17 1955 in Brussels -- a week prior to the much larger Paris premiere -- as a benefit for the Comité de Bruxelles de la Croix-Rouge de Belgique Brussels Committee of the Red Cross and the Comité des Dames de l'Entraide Française Ladies Committee of the French Mutual Aid. Trade edition. Signed & inscribed by Guitry in March 1918 to Edmond Roze theatre impresario and producer of this play. An extraordinarily NICE ASSOCIATION for this play. Also offered for sale along with the inscribed French trade edition is a hardcover English Version Translated by H. Granville Barker and published by Putnam in 1921. 8vo green cloth gilt-stamped. Very good. The first performance of the play occurred at the Vaudeville Theatre in Paris in February 1918. It was translated into English and ran on Broadway during 1920 and 1921. The French version was later made into a film in 1951 written and directed by Guitry. The title character of the play is based on Jean-Gaspard Deburau who was a real mime in the 1830s and whose unforgettable character was at the center of the film LES ENFANTS DE PARADIS THE CHILDREN OF PARADISE. <br /> <br /> PLEASE NOTE that all our First Editions are also First Printings unless we specifically note otherwise. This event took place shortly after the First World War and highlighted the burgeoning relationship between France and the United States.At the end of World War I: In 1919 France was still recovering from the devastation of war. Graveur imprimeur à Paris Stern Graveur atelier spécialisé dans la gravure de papier à lettre invitations faire-part monogrammes chevalières armoriées cartes de voeux.La Maison Stern et Aumoitte a été fondée en 1836 par Monsieur Aumoitte qui s'associe à un jeune graveur Moïse Stern. Cette association dure jusqu'à la fin des années 1850 puis Moïse Stern reprend la Maison. L'ex-libris de la Maison Stern devient un grand « S » dans lequel se loge un lion dressé la patte antérieure reposant sur le monogramme « MS » entrelacé. Une main brandissant un outil de graveur et deux pièces d'armure un gant et le casque complètent la composition. En 1867 et en 1889 la Maison Stern se voit décerner la Médaille d'Or lors de ces deux expositions universelles. Par la suite Moïse Stern sera occasionnellement membre du jury qui décerne cette médaille. Dans les années 1890 M.Stern associe son fils René à l'entreprise qui prend le nom de Stern et fils. René Stern reprend la boutique à son compte en 1904. Parmi ses prestigieux clients la Maison Stern a eu l'honneur de compter l'Elysée pour ses menus et ses invitations les ambassades la noblesse et les grandes entreprises françaises et étrangères. Chacun participe depuis longtemps au renom de la Maison. Depuis les générations se sont succédé avec aujourd'hui une volonté très forte de conserver et valoriser un savoir-faire et des techniques qui tendent à disparaître.Engraver and printer in Paris Stern Graveur was a workshop specializing in the engraving of letterheads invitations announcements monograms heraldic signet rings and greeting cards. The Maison Stern et Aumoitte was founded in 1836 by Mr. Aumoitte who partnered with a young engraver Moïse Stern. T.his partnership lasted until the late 1850s when Moïse Stern took over the company. The Maison Stern bookplate became a large "S" containing a rearing lion its foreleg resting on the intertwined monogram "MS." A hand brandishing an engraver's tool and two pieces of armor a glove and a helmet complete the composition. In 1867 and 1889 the Maison Stern was awarded the Gold Medal at these two World's Fairs. Moïse Stern would later occasionally serve as a member of the jury that awarded this medal. In the 1890s. Mr. Stern brought his son René into the business which took the name Stern et fils. René Stern took over the shop in 1904. Among its prestigious clients Maison Stern has had the honor of counting the Élysée Palace for its menus and invitations embassies the nobility and major French and foreign companies. On y voit Yvonne Printemps vieillie dans le rôle de la chanteuse Mariette Fleury et costumée en homme dans celui de Giovanni. . Jouée pour la première fois au Théâtre Édouard VII le 1er octobre 1928 Mariette est une réécriture de Comment on écrit l'histoire pièce en 2 actes composée par Sacha Guitry pour une unique représentation au Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt le 4 décembre 1920 dans le cadre du Gala Noblet. Dans sa version d'origine Yvonne Printemps partageait le rôle de Mariette avec Sarah Bernhardt celle-ci jouant les scènes où le personnage est âgé tandis que Guitry interprétait Napoléon et jouait aux côtés de son père Lucien Guitry lequel tenait le rôle du roi Jérôme. Les clichés sont l'oeuvre du fils du célèbre photographe polonais Stanisław Julian Ostroróg 1836-1890 qui fit carrière entre Londres et Paris sous le nom de Waléry créant une véritable marque de fabrique. Stanislaw Julian Ignacy 1863-1929 reprit l'atelier à la mort de son père en 1890 et s'associa avec Charles Auguste Varsavaux. Also reprint of interview with Belasco and a tribute to Belasco. Belasco now known by most merely as the name of a theater was one of the leading theater impresarios and a flamboyant showmen in New York in the late 19th and early 20th century noted especially for his crowd-pleasing stage effects and popular entertainments. Condition: other than very minor wear along lower edge of DJ and a few spots on its rear this is a pristine copy and the DJ can still comfortably be described as in fine condition. In good condition though somewhat grubby with 'SACHA GUITRY in 1939' in manuscript written in white ink on Guitry's collar. A striking head and shoulders portrait shot from below out of doors of Guitry staring intently ahead and to the left. He wears a white panama hat with black band a patterned tie dark shirt and grey jacket with specks. Gum marks from previous mounting around edges of reverse. See Images. 1939. unknown
