A second edition copy of Charles-Georges Fenouillot de Falbaire de Quingey's best known play The Honest Criminal. Published in French. The Honest Criminal is inspired by the French poetics of Jean-François Marmontel who proposed to rejuvenate tragedy by representing modern events with bourgeois heroes. Fenouillot's play was banned from performance in Paris by the minister Louis Phélypeaux de Saint-Florentin and consequently attracted attention. The play was performed to Princess Marie-Antoinette in 1769 and was eulogized by Voltaire. With a library stamp to page 44 from the Library of Our Lady of Sion school in Worthing. In a full brown calf binding. Externally generally smart. The volume is missing a little calf to the front board near the head of the spine. The front joint is cracking and the rear joint is starting to crack near the head of the spine. With some moderate wear to the extremities. The front and rear hinges are starting but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages are a little cockled with some light scattered foxing throughout. Good - hardcover

Title page of the first book apparently a presentation copy is inscribed in a contemporary hand: "de la part de l'auteur" and of this title OCLC locates only editions of 1777 but 1776 is the earliest edition in the Biblithèque Nationale.<br /> <br /> The second piece Le Fabricant de Londres was frequently reprinted and appeared in 1771 in two forms: this illustrated edition with fine plates after Gravelot and another without illustrations.<br /> <br /> As for the third piece Barbier attributes it following Quérard to a certain "financier célelebre" ny the name of Randon de Boisset and the collation appears to be the same as the 1761 edition in the BN. Interestingly a collected edition of the works of Denis Diderot Londres 1773 included this title in its contents - without Diderot's permission.<br /> <br /> An interesting compilation of of French drama from a period of revolutionary ferment.
