12mo., on laid paper, parallel texts in French and English, with engraved frontispiece, title in red and black, and woodcut decorations in the text, endpapers mildly age-marked; contemporary mottled calf, red sprinkled edges, expertly rebacked in calf with raised bands, backstrip with red leather label ruled and lettered in gilt, a remarkably bright, clean, crisp copy.
Sm. 8vo., First Edition thus; original pictorial green wrappers, backstrip very slightly browned else a near fine copy. First appearance in Rieu's renowned 'Penguin Classics' series, and first publication of Wood's translation. Includes The Misanthrope, The Sicilian or Love the Painter, Tartuffe or The Imposter, A Doctor in Spite of Himself, The Imaginary Invalid. The choice of cover roundel disappointed the translator: ';If my opinion of the roundel were sought I should say that by Penguin standards it is no more than very ordinary'. Penguin Classics L89.
