Saint-Simon qui ne l’aimait guère le représente comme un bouffon professionnel, Melle de Montpensier le dit “grand discoureur sur les plus petites affaires”. Ménage a recueilli quelques uns de ses bons mots, suscitant des vocations. Dans ce recueil de 20 anecdotes drolatiques ont trouve aussi un portrait de Roquelaure.Ces aventures furent souvent réimprimées, y compris dans la bibliothèque bleue de colportage.
