Fregi xilografici. Blanda brunitura generale dovuta alla qualità della carta. Mancano le 2 cc. bianche finali. Ex libris nobiliare. Stesso anno della prima edizione veneziana. Quest'opera fu anche attribuita (Melzi, Anonime e pseudonime, vol. 3, p. 156) al compositore Benedetto Marcello (che in effetti aveva pubblicato anonimo nel 1720 il libello satirico “Il Teatro alla Moda”). Nel 1738 era apparso il 6° ed ultimo volume della 4a edizione del Vocabolario della Crusca: questa parodia coeva mette alla berlina gli eccessi dei “puristi” della lingua.

Cloth a bit rubbed and soiled with some pale stains to the image on the upper board of the second front free endsheet of second volume neatly excised small punctures/scrapes at toes of spine cat scratching otherwise good and sound. First edition of these parodies of ALICE. by the prolific journalist and miscellaneous writer written with the unspecified collaboration of M. H. Temple. Both are primarily political satires the product of frustrations about the Boer War and the British government of the time. Begbie went on to support pacifists and conscientious objection to the Great War and put himself out front with a vigorous defense of the reality of the supposed apparition of the Angel of Mons. In small type with the 'old version' of the nursery rhyme in the left hand column transformed into a 'new version' of 78 lines of prose in the right-hand column. The first line - 'This is the house that Jack built' - is changed into 'This is the domiciliary edifice erected by John.' The 'priest all shaven and shorn' becomes 'the ecclesiastical gentleman the summit of whose pericranium was denuded of its natural covering'. Scarce: no copy in the British Library or on COPAC.
