194394890New York: S.R.T. Publications Inc. 1943. 1943. Very good. ISSUE CONTAINING A POEM BY AFRICAN AMERICAN POET HERCULES ARMSTRONG - Quarto approximately 11-3/4 inches high by 8-3/4 inches wide softcover bound in pictorial red-and-white wrappers. The binding is lightly rubbed with some minor soiling. The corners of the front wrap are slightly bumped & there is a light paper-clip mark to the bottom edge of the rear wrap. 34 pages. Black-and-white illustrations. The bottom page corners are lightly bumped. Very good.
There are two items of special literary interest in this issue. On pages 26-27 is a one-and-a half page poem "O! Soviet Land!" by little-known African American poet D. Hercules Armstrong. Genevieve Taggard writes a note on Armstrong below the poem. He was born in Georgia in 1919. He was attracted to poetry by the writing of Langston Hughes and Countee Cullen and had poems published in a several magazines. Pursuing his interest in writing for choral groups he wrote "O! Soviet Land!" for a group of young people who rehearsed the chant and provided feedback. He felt that the writing benefited from its preparation for group production.
On page 27 is an unusual translation by Roy Temple House of Bertolt Brecht's poem "The Soldier's Wife" "Ballad of the Soldier's Wife". (New York: S.R.T. Publications, Inc.), 1943. paperback
193818323New York: Hillman-Curl Inc. Very Good in Poor dj. 1938. 1st U.S. edition. Hardcover. book itself is solid and internally clean some soiling and light shelfwear to top and bottom edges; the jacket however has had about as many bad things done to it as you can imagine: it's been laminated which has resulted in considerable yellowing/discoloration trimmed a bit along the top and bottom edges and the flaps are glued to the pastedowns; some of the laminate has also been peeled away which doesn't help matters much. A novelization essentially of Brecht and Kurt Weill's "The Threepenny Opera." Jacket-blurbed as "an unashamed and outrageous epic of roguery triumphant -- a rollicking full-blooded story whole-hearted in its descriptions of rascality and corruption" this translation was first published in England in 1937 by Robert Hale. A not-especially-pretty example of a fairly scarce book. . Hillman-Curl, Inc. hardcover

1982ABE-1592325368252Limited Editions Club New York 1982 This edition of Bertolt Brecht's script for one of the 20th century's most innovative and political musicals was translated by Desmond Vesey with lyrics rendered in English by Eric Bentley who also wrote the introduction. The 12 full-page illustrations are reproductions of Jack Levine's etchings of scenes from G.W. Pabst's 1931 film version of The Threepenny Opera. There is one original three-color lithograph pulled by Emiliano Sorini specially bound into this edition as the frontispiece. Howard I. Gralla designed the book choosing a 12-point Walbaum font with two points leading-space between the lines. This is numbered copy 1918 of the 2000 printed signed by both Levine and Bentley at the colophon. The monthly newsletter is laid in. Binding: Full black linen stamped in gold on the front cover from a design by Levine with gilt lettering to spine. Binding slipcase and illustrations all properly evoke the grittiness of the London underworld. Published by the Limited Editions Club 529. Bound as above in original black slipcase with gilt lettering to spine; the slipcase is not great but it is still doing its job protecting this lovely book. THE ORIGINAL GLASSINE JACKET IS INCLUDED. Signed by Illustrator. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. Limited Editions Club New York hardcover
