Grecia, 326 d.C.: tredici anni dopo l’Editto di tolleranza emesso a Milano da Costantino il Grande, la vita culturale e sociale dell’Impero romano è profondamente segnata dal dibattito tra cristiani e pagani. In questo contesto, il capocomico Tespi nutre un sogno impossibile: risuscitare lo spirito dell’antica tragedia ateniese e riportare a nuova vita gli agoni teatrali. Per realizzare questo sogno raccoglie ad Atene un gruppo di attori che sbarcano il lunario interpretando pantomime sullo stesso suolo sul quale secoli prima avevano messo in scena le loro opere Eschilo, Sofocle ed Euripide. Da Atene il gruppo di teatranti si imbarca alla volta dell’antico santuario di Zeus a Dodona, in Epiro, facendo tappa a Corinto, sulla costa di fronte a Delfi e nei pressi dell’Acheronte. A Dodona, nell'antico teatro annesso al tempio, Tespi intende rappresentare una delle più celebri tragedie di Eschilo, il Prometeo incatenato. Ma prima di arrivare a Dodona i teatranti dovranno diventare attori veri e comprendere il senso sublime della loro missione. Li invita perciò a lesinare sugli orgasmi, fecondando piuttosto se stessi, mette la cintura di castità a Melpòmene, l’attrice più avvenente. Ma poiché le utopie arrivano sempre fuori tempo, anche le illusioni di Tespi sono destinate a essere frustrate. Rimane però tutto il sapore di un’epoca disorientata, in questo tanto simile alla nostra, ma ancora amante del dialogo e rispettosa delle diversità. E rimane l’amarezza per un sogno naufragato, per uno slancio romantico del cuore e della mente che non riesce a porsi come istanza universale. Vasilis Guroghiannis è nato nel 1951 nel nord della Grecia, presso Ghiànnina. Si è laureato in Giurisprudenza all'Università di Salonicco, e dal 1977 esercita l’avvocatura ad Atene. Ha pubblicato le raccolte poetiche Fotografia di un monte (1985), e Commenti in versi (1987), le prose Racconti di fenomeni paranormali (1990), e il romanzo La betonica in fiore (1992). Nel 1995 ha pubblicato il poema Medea, una rivisitazione eretica dell’omonimo mito, e nel 1998 il romanzo I commedianti di Atene.
