A very clean copy.Aprs avoir t reprsent 73 fois Paris la Comdie-Franaise pendant la saison 1784-1785 Le Mariage de Figarode Beaumarchais fut publi par son auteur Kehl la fin mars 1784 et Paris au dbut avril 1785. Avant cette double publication le texte de la pice avait t copi au cours des reprsentations donnant naissance entre autres la fameuse dition d'Amsterdam publie en janvier 1785 l'dition Gay probablement publie en fvrier 1785 et une version en anglais reprsente Londres partir de dcembre 1784 et publie en mars 1785. Ces trois sources indpendantes entre elles montrent que le texte de la double dition autorise ne concide pas toujours avec celui des reprsentations et elles nous fournissent de nombreuses didascalies essentielles. Un manuscrit dcouvert Rouen qui contient la version de l'dition d'Amsterdam corrige et augmente vient de surcrot se substituer heureusement ce texte condamn par Beaumarchais. Sur la version scnique originale nous disposons galement du tmoignage des critiques contemporains notamment en ce qui concerne les deux premires reprsentations sensiblement plus longues. Les trois manuscrits authentiques de l'auteur ainsi qu'une dition pr-originale jusqu'ici inconnue peuvent galement tre mis contribution lorsque leurs variantes concident avec celles des sources directes. Ce volume contient une notice dtaille sur l'histoire de la pice et de son texte avec une tude sur les reprsentations en province et l'tranger ainsi qu'une description et une discussion approfondies des diffrentes sources accompagne d'une bibliographie matrielle comprenant une soixantaine d'ditions dates de l'anne 1785. Notre dition qui reproduit scrupuleusement le texte de la version autorise pris sur la deuxime dition de Kehl identifie pour la premire fois fournit l'ensemble des variantes confirmes et des didascalies de la version scnique originale du Mariage de Figaro accompagn d'une discussion des plus importantes d'entre elles. 0 Voltaire Foundation paperback

The signatures run as 1 4 2-18 4 19 4. The second book in Beaumarchais' 'Figaro' trilogy'. 'Le Mariage de Figaro' is a comedic play in five acts. The play is set in the castle of Aguas Frescas which is three leagues from Seville. The play begins in the bedroom to be shared in the castle by Figaro and Suzanne after their wedding. In this play Beaumarchais denounces aristocratic privilege which as this work was first published in 1778 is often seen as foreshadowing of the forthcoming French Revolution. The other books in the 'Figaro' trilogy are 'Le Barbier de Seville' and 'La Mere Coupable'. Pierre Beaumarchais was a French polymath being a revolutionary publisher spoy horticulturist watchmaker as well as many other pursuits. He was a supporter of American independence. Considered an important figure in the literary movement of classicism and best known for this work. Le Barbier de Seville et Le Mariage de Figaro 1907. Two plays being: The Barber of Seville conceived as an opera comique following a traditional commedia dell'arte structure following a simple love triangle in which a Spanish count has fallen in love with a girl called Rosine; and The Marriage of Figaro a comedy in five acts the Count has already grown bored with his marriage and is taking notice of Figaro's fiancé Suzanne. These plays are followed by The Guilty Mother to complete the three Figaro plays. Written by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais a French playwright and diplomat during the Age of Enlightenment best known for his three Figaro plays. In the original full calf with gilt. Externally sound with rubbing and light fading to the extremities. Minor loss to the head and tail of the spines with the odd small mark to the boards. Front hinge starting but firm to Les Maximes.
