Water-stains throughout and musty. Boards are very bowed worn and chipped. Large piece at bottom of spine is chipped away. Front board/spine seam is chipped all the way down so board is only held to binding by cords. Slight worming affects the leather at spine. Moderate to deep foxing throughout. 8 540 28 pages. German translation of Fleury's Moeurs des Israelites first published in 1681; Moeurs des Chretiens first published in 1682. Fleury was a Jesuit educated Catholic prelate and tutor to the King's son. He was notable for his academic works and "the modest simplicity of his life and the uprightness of his conduct." -Enc.Brit. 1911. <br> "In the first the customs of the Israelites are described briefly but sufficiently in 34 paragraphs describing their way of life arts clothing buildings civil regime warfare all manner of customs etc. In the second the customs of the Christians are described in 68 paragraphs describing their way of life baptism prayer work fasting marriage persecution penance and other customs of the early Christians then those of the early Christian princes the nature of their church buildings the worship service the clergy etc. Finally the decline and restoration of godliness and church discipline are contained in such a way that in this short work everything that occurs in church history that is remarkable is dealt with clearly and concisely. Spine and title page note that this is Volume 2 only. Title page dated 1761. Hardcover 8vos. full calf raised bands and two leather and gilt title labels to spine marbled edges and endpapers. 453 pp. including table of contents in rear. Beautiful penmanship brilliantly aligned and ruled. Generally Very Good; corners worn; shallow chipping to spine ends; hinges drying up but still secure. Clean interior. WorldCat mentions a book with similar title as published in 1729 but it also says that it's just 52 pages. A truly one of a kind item -- sadly though this is Volume 2 only. np hardcover
