1925023008New Preston CT: Bernhardt Wall 1925. Limited Edition. Square Octavo. Limited to only 100 copies signed by the author. The present copy is number 82 and has 23 etchings plus another laid in. No pagination. The first etching titled "One of 'Em" is also signed by Wall. Known as the etcher of books Wall wrote and illustrated his books designed them etched the plates printed and signed each etching then cut folded gathered sewed bound lettered and labeled them. His carear began designing post cards and holiday cards over 5000 cards. His works were also in the private collections of J. P. Morgan Franklin D. Roosevelt Henry C. Frick and Dr. N.C. Mathewson. Wall etched three sitting presidents of the United States Theodore Roosevelt Warren Taft and Henry Coolidge. Bound in 1/4 black coth over boards etching to upper right cotner. in plain green dust jacket with loss to spine and one corner small chips and a closed tear to rear panel. No names or bookplates. Eight reference photographs from the film bound in variously among the script pages each with an RKO stamp on the versos and four with a mimeo snipe on the versos. Original wrapper bound in with the manuscript ink annotation of Wald's name on the top right as well as six pink revision pages of an "Optional Ending" following the script.<br /> <br /> Jerry Wald is best remembered for his long and successful association with Warner Brothers as both a screenwriter and producer of a number of notable films including "Mildred Pierce" 1945 "Humoresque" 1946 "Key Largo" 1948 and "Flamingo Road" 1949. In the 1950s he moved to Twentieth Century-Fox and was the producer there for "An Affair to Remember" 1957 "Peyton Place" 1957 and "Sons and Lovers" 1960. <br /> <br /> Remake of the 1942 French film "Le volle bleu" direced by Jean Stelli and starring Gaby Morlay and Elvire Popesco. Jane Wyman stars as a WWI war widow who after loosing her only child spends her life as a children's nurse.<br /> <br /> Bound in light green cloth with dark green quarter leather binding with five raised bands and gilt titles on the spine. Distribution page integral with title page with receipt removed dated April 9 1951 noted as REVISED FINAL SCRIPT with credits for screenwriter Norman Corwin and story credit for Francois Campaux. 163 leaves with last page of text numbered "143-146." A cold-blooded American expatriate is drawn into the criminal underworld in Syria and begins smuggling guns into the country for the Syrian rebels during the 1925 insurgency against the French. <br /> <br /> Set in Syria shot on location in Yuma Arizona. <br /> <br /> Green titled wrappers noted as FINAL DRAFT on the front wrapper noted as production No. 991 dated Oct. 30 1950. Publisher's original rust colored linen over boards; inset paper label to upper cover rectangular hand lettered in brown watercolor: GREENWICH VILLAGE BERNHARDT WALL in the artist's hand; thick cream colored endpapers. Leaves are unpaged natural edged handmade laid paper with well inked detailed impressions. The title page is signed in pencil by the artist: "Copy no. 7. Bernhardt Wall". Title page includes the faintly visible: "1947 BWAY NYC" artist's address. Second leaf features the "Index" which lists the 21 scenes to follow. Each page is protected by a tissue guard. We believe this is the same edition of this work as is held by the New York Historical Society though their speculation of 1918 seems unlikely given a few scenes seem to carry 1920 dates. Partial Gotham Book Mart sticker to rear pastedown. BOOK CONDITION: it should be emphasized that every aspect of this production is in pristine bright fresh condition. A very sharp copy. This copy inscribed to Mrs. Jean Hale Mrs Gladys Taylor and Rosamund Jean Hale was Edwin Markham's secretary and all three are mentioned in the "Etcher's Notes" plate in the book. The inscription is signed by Bernhardt Wall dated Feb. 25 1937 Houston Texas "from our winter etcherie". Plain brown boards with an imprinted etching on the upper front board green cloth tape-covered spine 13 x 1/ 1/4 inches unpaginated 34 leaves excluding blanks at front and rear 34 etchings/plates including the limitation page most etchings signed by Wall. Includes etched plates of the text of Markham's Man With The Hoe. No dustcover. Fine. Rare indeed 3 OCLC copies. "Bernhardt Wall 18721956 was a Connecticut Yankee who wintered in La Porte Texas his wife's family home for many years. In the mid-1930s he produced at least three books of copper-plate engravings during his annual Texas sojourns: Following General Sam Houston 17931863 1935 Following Stephen F. Austin Father of Texas 1936 and Following Andrew Jackson 1937. The process was so tedious and time-consuming that the editions were always severely limited; however these are the finished work of a well-rounded artisan. Wall wrote his books designed them etched the plates printed and signed each etching then cut folded gathered sewed bound lettered and labeled them. After his wife's death in 1938 Wall like the horseman in his colophon rode away-back to Connecticut where he later remarried. He lived his own last years in Sierra Madre California." 1722RO091. Octavo original pictorial wrappers front panel illustration by Maggy Monier. Presentation copy lengthily inscribed with an eight line inscription from Bernhardt on the half-title page "A Leon Deffocce je ne crois pas que mon petite roman arrete un instant vos regards mais la cependant vous en lirez quelques pages Soyez clement pour. Sarah Bernhardt." In near fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Sarah Bernhardt was a French stage actress who starred in some of the most popular French plays of the late 19th and early 20th centuries including La Dame Aux Camelias by Alexandre Dumas fils; Ruy Blas by Victor Hugo Fédora and La Tosca by Victorien Sardou and L'Aiglon by Edmond Rostand. She also played male roles including Shakespeare's Hamlet. Rostand called her "the queen of the pose and the princess of the gesture" while Hugo praised her "golden voice". She made several theatrical tours around the world and was one of the first prominent actresses to make sound recordings and to act in motion pictures. Editions Nilsson unknown

Three pages of etched preliminaries plus 21 original etchings with tissue guards. Stain and paper remnant on rear board hinges a little started thus very good; internally about fine. Copy number 3 of 50 numbered copies in the third state Signed by the artist. Additionally this copy is Inscribed by Wall "from a fellow sojourner in old Greenwich Village" and dated in 1921. 1930137209New York: Self-Published 1930. Limited to 26 copies. Hardbound. Internally VG covers are weakly attached and spine cloth getting weaker due to weight of covers with embedded zinc etching plates one in each. Paper-covered thick cardboard covers with a thin and deteriorating cloth spine. Front cover upper right has an etching which represents the title of the book. No printing along spine. Four preliminary sheets each an etching followed by 22 signed etchings and finishing up with an unsigned etching as the endsheet. The Limitation page etched has written in ink that this is copy 25 of a total of 26. A laid-in typed sheet dated Lime Rock Ct. in 1937 states that the original intent was to print 50 copies of this the third state of the book. However it goes on to say the zinc plates began to deteriorate and the edition was halted at 26. Each inside cover has a plate embedded into it. The front cover has an architectural scene and the rear cover has a dancing scene. All 22 of the artist image etchings is signed. Weber p. 31: "An interesting pictorial presentation of 'the Montmartre of America' an area in Manhattan long frequented by authors artists and students." The limitation leaf describes Greenwich Village thus: "A hodge-podge of tumble-down tenements rickety architectural relics with a great deal of modernity just minced together. Mushroom tea taverns & dancing dens have found lodgement in the attics & cellars." One of the most charming and spirited of Wall's productions. Self-Published hardcover
